QB2 - How you guys feeling?

I’ve never seen an administration give fewer F’s about the backup QB position/developing a QB. They just can’t be bothered with it. Goff has saved this from becoming an issue to this point. Good on him for that. But the law of averages always lurks….

They did spend a 3rd round pick and 2 years on one :man_shrugging:

Do I want Dobbs to ever play? Nope.

Do I think they can still at least compete with Dobbs? Yes.

As far as backup QBs go Dobbs is fine. If Goff goes down most chances of us winning anything of significance are long gone though.

Long-term, yes.

What I always want out of a backup QB is a guy who can win you a few games if the starter goes down for the short-term. I.E. not Tim Boyle. Do I think Dobbs can do that? Yeah I do, I just watched him win games in Minnesota and Arizona, of all places.

I think at first, they were actively looking to draft and develop a QB. Thank God the 49ers picked Trey Lance in that first draft. And of course we took a shot on Hooker. True, they were not where GB or the Rams were in drafting someone in the first round, but they were looking. But I think they have had their eyes open to anyone who slips…that they had a higher grade on. It happenned with Hooker, and then Brad had other ideas on what to do with mid-round picks. It has to be a priority soon I would think. I personally think we can do better than Altmeyer.

That’s a pretty bold take. I don’t think I’m ready to go out that far on a limb. Hill is still probably the best backup we’ve had in the last 40 years. And I don’t think it’s been all that close.

I see a “back up QB” different I guess , what I want in a back up QB is a able QB that CAN function well for several games , IF our starter got injured badly. not only function well but win games, be responsible with the football, and stay in games at LEAST five games and win-NOT jog out there and lose us all five games or whenever our starter can get back. I want the back up QB to only be a small drop off from the starter, not night and day worse than our starter. Injuries are multifaceted ok, they can be minor or they can be complicated and take a month to recover from , instead of like three games. like Shaun Hill used to be for us, there was never a time that I was cringing in fear that Shaun Hill had to play and fill in, because he played well even long term- I cannot say Dobbs can, I think Dobbs is “maybe” at most , a three game guy if he had to be called up because something fairly concerning happened to Goff. that is I think Dobbs would be “ok” to play decent for three games while Jared returned.
any more than three games and I think we would be in trouble with Dobbs ball. I sort of hope that Dobbs can be ok while playing , dialed up and starting normally, but I’m not confident in him yet.

From 1981 - 1995 their backups were so good they started a different one every year

I mean, me too! Who wouldn’t?

I just don’t think those guys are very readily available. They are very likely to be signed by a desperate team - one who hopes they can be the starter. As a result, you get priced out of the market.

Do you want to pay, say, $10 million to a guy who you hope never sees the field? Because I can see this hypothetical backup getting offered at LEAST that much to start for some other team. What other position do you want to pull that $10 million from? In a salary cap league, these decisions get very tricky.

Ahhh good point, Shaun Hill was an A+ backup. I still remember when his fat dad bod scrambled for like 50 up the middle against Green Bay.

What about Jeff Garcia? Though between him, Kitna, McMahon, Harrington, Culpepper I can’t even remember who were the starters & who were the backups during that era

seems like we only pick from a back up QB pool , where they are nowhere near Goff’s level. for some reason, I think Altmeyer wouldn’t be as far of a drop off, than Dobbs, I just don’t have a comfy feeling watching Dobbs play.

I felt that way with the Washington game, but seeing him against the Colts, I was like, “This is the guy.” Whereas watching Alty against the Colts, I was like, “This is not the guy.”

Gave every guy out there with a dad bod an extra 2” in our own attempts to score.

preseason, I remember Alt playing almost half the time Dobbs did, right NOW, I am not on the Dobbs Bandwagon.

An why in the Hail does Dobbs look like a recovering caner patient !? dude is pale.

He has alopecia. He can’t grow hair anywhere on his body including eybrows, eye lashes, etc. Like people undergoing cancer treatment. But it has nothing to do with his skin color.
