Speaking of Rat…. I saw an article on ESPN picking the biggest remaining need for each NFL team and the author picked RG staying Tate was bad last year and hurt the team. I was a bit taken aback honestly

Apparently Aaron Shartz from ESPN hasn’t ever heard that the play of the OC next to the OGs can have an impact of their success.
Tate may have had Sewell on his right side, but Glasgow’s poor play could have had a negative impact on Ratledge and Mahogany last season at times. Mahogany also had an injured Decker on his left, who wasn’t playing all that well either.

This is the type of “do as little actual research as possible” reporting that will very soon be the norm once AI replaces all these lazy MFer’s. If the PFF grade is bad, the player is bad. All analysis takes place in a vacuum without digging deeper into root causes. I remember a time when there was real integrity in sports reporting. I miss the old “The Sports Reporters” show where there was real preparation and institutional knowledge about the game that was the benchmark. Today it’s “say the thing that will rile up each fanbase, regardless of accuracy, to encourage more clicks”.

Fair enough, but don’t blame the writers. It’s the business model. They offer really shitty pay and the results show it. Long gone are the days when publishers pay good money for good work. And don’t hold your breath for AI to produce great content, it’s a tool but it’s not going to replace human writing anytime soon. People can suss AI copy and their eyes glaze over and they click away from it. LLMs have hit a wall, but the hype is still over the top.

There will be a market for real writing/reporting, in fact the proliferation of poorly-researched clickbait stories will probably hasten it, though the prohibitive costs of everything will keep it in check for a bit too. But already the Athletic is out there, not to mention plenty of niche substacks. It just requires more seeking out.

Yeah, people are used to free content. You get what you pay for as usual. I remember quite enjoying the print edition of SI waaaay back in the day. Some great writing. The rise of video is also a huge factor.
The career trajectory for a sports writer today also discourages people from entering the biz. You have to be willing to work for peanuts for a very long time, climb the rungs, and build a solid portfolio before anyone will pay you real money for it. It was always kinda that way, but now the vast majority of gigs are rubbish and the cost of living is high and getting higher. Tough go.
I was a card-carrying guild reporter when I was 22. Back then if you got lucky like that you were on your way. Not many union gigs out there today.

Now a lot of sports media folks start out working for literally nothing writing for SI, Bleacher Report or any number of other websites that let you write for them for free to get bylines/clips and something to add to a resume.
We used to have 4 full-time sportswriters at the Traverse City Record-Eagle about 15 years ago. Now it’s just me and a few freelancers that take enough off my plate to keep me reasonably sane while trying to cover 45 high schools.
Media work, especially in sports, has changed a lot over the last 30 years.

I don’t think it’s all season. He’s not likely to miss Salmon and Deer seasons, now that he’s “retired”.

Why? He wanted to come back last season. He just didn’t pass the physical.
