Re-Signing Romeo Okwara V. DT/DE Solomon or Other Free Agent?

@MyLions that articles stats are way off.

You can go here for the official stats and see for yourself.

2020 NFL Advanced Defense | Pro-Football-Reference.com

Your misquoting me. I said he had 10 QB hurries and 31 pressures. Those are two different stat categories. I pointed out both and where he ranked at both. Including sacks. Please reread my post. Thanks

TJ Watt lead the league last year with 61 pressures by the way.

10 Hurries isn’t anything special. 31 pressures is respectable though.

However you have to understand that Okwara never sees double teams unlike a guy like Donald or Garrett who does.

I think it would be a mistake to tie up 10+ mil into a player like Okwara. I’d look to the draft.

I think you are really under valuing him. I thinks it’s funny thinking we had good coverage that help him get sacks. I also think your over valuing the defense he played in. I mean he might be the only player on that defense to play well. He was better then any player they brought that knew the system. I think his value is right around 10 million. He only started 9 games and had 10 sacks had 44 tackles, 11 TFL, 3 FF , 18 QB hits and a safety. All on a defense that might be the worst in NFL history.

Okwara had a strong season on a terrible defense, no doubt. But, I agree with Air, Okwara is rarely doubled and is not the type of player to take over a game. He plays with tons of effort and for the right price I’d like to have him back. However, if some team offers him a massive contact, the Lions should let him walk.

His brother Julian has more natural skill and explosiveness off the ball. So, we could potentially replace Okwara with Okwara. Julian will cost us about 1/10th of what Romeo is going to get in free agency.

I don’t think so… but I’ll add a little more to my thought process. First let me start by saying I like Okwara for what he is. I like him as a player and I’d love to have him back. But … in today’s NFL players with double digit sacks often get paid 10+ mil a year. I think he gets that and for that price I would pass. He’s not worth it.

Why isn’t he worth it? …

  1. He’s a high effort guy, rarely double teamed and as a result he looks good on highlight film, but is less impressive when you look at his complete body of work.

  2. He’s super inconsistent. In 2020 he put up 10 Sacks in 2019 he had 1.5 sacks. In 2018 he had 7.5 sacks but in 2017 and 2016 he had just one sack combined. He’s averaged 5 sacks a season over his career. I think this is who he is… he is Inconsistent.

He’s coming off a double digit sack season and a team will likely see his young age (25) and 10 sacks and pay the man 10+ mil a year. But I think that’s a mistake.

Remember Kerry Hyder and his 8 sack season in DET. He then followed that up with two one sack seasons?.. he just had a 8.5 sack season for SF last year. They are similar players. They are high effort pass rush specialists who are streaky.

Both players disappear for long stretches. They both have games where they have little impact. Similar players in my opinion.

When you look at their complete body of work you realize they are more specialists than they are starting DE material.

I’d look towards the draft for his replacement. I want a guy who’s more consistent and has more overall impact on the game.

However if I could get Okwara back on a 6 mil a year deal then I’d do it… but I don’t think that happens.
