Flipping between this and the tigers. This Carolina Ottawa game is good, and holy smokes - if the wings were in this game they’d all be injured in the locker room. Watching playoff hockey makes me realize (again) just how far they have to go

Soderblom just got beat badly by Sanheim and he scored immediately afterwards. Elmer may always be a defensive liability.
Everything is magnified in the playoffs. T-bay takes a few needless penalties and now Slavkovsky gets a hat trick and the winning goal in the Habs overtime win. Buffalo Storms back in the 3rd in a huge win over Boston. Many had doubts about the Sabres lack of playoff experience.
Wings need some changes to match up to these clubs.
I like the intensity of these playoffs so far.

I’m rooting for Montreal. I live in NC but the Canes can blow me. And I want to laugh at Marner again. His teammates might carry him to round 2. Possibly.

Steve was ready to pull the trigger, wanted a verbal agreement from Hughes he’d resign at the end of his deal, Hughes wouldn’t give him that assurance.

I have YET to see an independent new source confirm this. Every report ive seen that says it was Hughes fault has been a detroit local media.
Every other news source ive read is that negotiations never even got that far. Because steve wasn’t offering enough. Didnt want to give up young proven prospects like Edvisson.
So negotiations stopped completely. Never even got the extension part of the negotiations because Vancouver said not enough.
Now maybe Steve would have offered more if Hughes agreed to extension.
But EVERY report outside of Detroit has said, negotiations never got far enough because steve was being steve
And theres NHL RULES TO CONFIRM THIS!
So the trade must happen FIRST before negotiations can even START.

Yeah, I’m sure that the highly-respected Gave is just making things up for funsies.
Gave confirmed his information came from a source “within the (Red Wings) organization.” Hughes wouldn’t have been eligible to extend with Detroit until this summer, but with permission from the Canucks organization, he was able to discuss contracts with the Red Wings. Gave reports the contract at play was “seven figures long term,” and would have made him the “highest paid” Red Wing “by a fair margin.”
This is no different than any other sign-and-trade deal. A team agrees to terms and then the team allows them to “negotiate” a new deal with the player before completing the trade.

True but even still, I’m sure those conversations happen whether it’s allowed or not.
The red wings also have a very weird beat writer/reporter presence. I feel like they’re the opposite of the lions, where basically anyone can get credentialed with very basic qualifications. The wings have a handful that are credentialed, and none of them ask any tough questions, basically state run media. Max Bultman is ok but that’s it that I can think of.
Keith Gave was THE red wings guy back in the day and I’m sure he still has a ton of connections. I believe him but I can understand skepticism too. Otherwise not a lot of info gets out from them, they run an extremely tight ship as far as that stuff goes. Maybe that’s why Gave was able to report it, because he doesn’t have to worry about the wings revoking his credentials.

There’s just zero reason to doubt Gave’s reporting, imo. There’s no reason a high-respected voice like him has to drop any of this if it isn’t true. The guy is a border-line legend because of the Russian stuff. Could the org/his sources fed him bad information to try and make themselves look better? Sure, I guess. But I have almost little doubt Gave put this out without it coming from somewhere within the org.

Yeah, he also was the last wings beat writer who would ask tough questions and write not nice articles about them regularly when they deserved it. They knew he was a tough reporter, but he was also fair. Different time in wings history for sure
On a separate note, those yellow Pittsburgh uniforms are ■■■■■■■ terrible. I’m pulling for Philadelphia now solely because Pittsburgh has worn those two games in a row. That is all.

Im not doubting that may be the case HOWEVER.
Not a single 3rd party report backs it up completely.
The closest i could find is basically saying. Hughes didnt want to commit & Vancouver wanted more.
And steve Y didnt want to negotiate any of it.
This is my trade offer, this is my contract offer.
Take it or leave it.

They passed on another high prospect goalie to draft the “best Goalie draft pick in 10 years” in Cosa……
Cosa has yet to get more than back up goalie time in the NHL.
Meanwhile the guy they passed on.

Holy shit, we’re now crying because one goaltender is playing well in two playoff games vs our guy who was one of the best goalies in the AHL this season who was the main goalie in a tandem that just won the award for the least goals per game allowed in the AHL?

Cossa will have an opportunity to take care of business in the fall and make the squad. He has to know that this is his time especially that Gibson is under contract for one more year and Talbot’s contract is over.
Overall Yzerman has done a decent job of drafting especially Seider and Raymond. Some changes have to be made as many have already discussed. I can’t see Copp as the number 2 centre next year.
