Restore the Roar

So I just heard today that “Restore the Roar” actually pertained to the noise in the Silverdome?! I have always assumed it just has something to do with a Lion restoring his roar. Is this true? Is that where it originated?

Heard it on here.

The Silverdome did get seriously loud when it had 80,000 fans in their back in the 90’s. I remember the Jets game where Barry hit 2000 yards, the ref actually asked the crowd to quiet down after the Jets had like 7 false starts. Same game Reggie Brown almost died on the field. One of the wildest games in Lions history that was.

I remember. I was there. 3d row, upper deck, visitors’ side, about the 20 yard line.

I remember Barry swerving toward our sideline during this 53 yard run (starts at the 1:29 mark):

The Silverdome was a home field advantage unlike any other in the 80’s and 90’s.

When you go to a new stadium that fits close to 20,000 less people, they literally killed 25% of the roar. But, they didn’t lose any money because they just jacked up the prices for tickets.

It’s also hard to roar when you have a paper bag on your head and your down by 20 in the 1st Quarter every week.

Ford field will be plenty loud enough if they can actually ever host a playoff game. One that involves the lions and not a game moved there for other issues I should add.

Ford Field will be standing room only and roaring louder than any stadium in the league if they ever start winning even somewhat consistently.
We need something to roar about, for Pete’s sake!

Wayne Fontes wanted a DE and WR who could blot out the Sun and he wanted to restore the roar. It happened some Sundays but far too few.

He had Moore, Perriman, and Green/Morton.
What more could he ask for?
A good QB, maybe!

Yeah the Silver Dom was big. I remember being mad because all the home games got black out from no sellouts. Was one of the only teams you had to hope the away game was televised so you could watch your team play.

Also raced in the supercross there when I was 15. It was pretty cool.

Silverdome was an acoustic dream for an NFL home team. Ford Field has some of the weirdest acoustics in the NFL. It gets loud, but Lions’ fans have to hyper-extend their lungs to beyond full capacity to get REALLY loud.

Hope they enjoyed it the first three home games. They might not hear it again this year.

Yeah, the design of Ford Field makes it difficult if not impossible to ever match Silverdome db levels
The open ends are nice but … ruin the chance to amplify noise

This was before we drafted Moore and Porcher.

They have maxed at 121. I’ve been to some games and 90-110 is actually not that hard to achieve; the sound just… I dunno, goes somewhere else. When that place is 110, it simply does not sound like 110.

Which is a shame because 110 is a damn good crowd DB level in the NFL. It just sounds different.

Hit 110 in other stadiums and it’s deafening. Most NFL teams’ all-time records are in the teens to very low 20s.

The acoustics from the design of the building VS the noise the crowd actually makes is an odd dichotomy for sure.

When I meet my maker, at the pearly gates, I’m going to ask for two things:
Lord, can I go back and witness the ‘91 playoff game, and the ‘97 Jets game live and in person?
