Sciatica pain is no joke!

Dealing with a flare up right now as well for the last 6 months have had three in the last ten years first 2 went away after epidural steroid shots this time 2 shots didn’t clear it up so had a microdisectomy done about 6 weeks post op doing alot better but not back to normal. The 2 main things that cause it is getting pinched In your spine from herniated disc or rubbing on your hip bone where the nerve goes through. Best thing for the pain I found is ice packs usually on the lower back or area with most pain alternating with a heating pad

This is a thing to. The pelvic bone gets a little wacky and strengthening the glute, hamstrings, and quads helps also.

Under the hips at the lower back or above the hips?

Above hips

It’s the worst man, had it for years. If they suggest steroid injections, do it! They make a big difference.

This happened to me about 3 years ago. I went down to pick up a pumpkin for the wife. My whole lower part of my back went numb. Almost feel over. I was in server pain for about two and half weeks. Here and there i have server lower back pain. Hang in there. It will get better

Yeah I have had 2 “events”

Both times I just sat on the couch not moving. Literally stopped eating for the most part because it hurt too bad to move let alone stand up walk to toilet and sit back down.

Luckily mine was just due to hurting back doing something and not permanent. It is brutal and both times I would be in such pain I would get nauseous. No pain Meds touched it for me. Just had to wait until the nerve chilled out.

Sending prayer for healing as it is not a fun one

I feel you bro. Health care today is really really screwed up. I’ve had a UTI for weeks, and between labs prescribing the wrong antibiotic and doctor’s offices not answering their phones, its been a shitshow. You really have to be your own advocate and don’t take no for an answer.

Hope you find relief fast, if I was close I’d give you some of my left over pain relievers.

Nerve pain and phantom pain are the worst!

I get it often, used to last only roughly 24 hours. But a couple times near the end of 2025 I had it last at times 3-4 days. I refuse to take anything for it and just deal with it the best natural way possible. But I took 400mg of aleve one night as my nerve pain was coupled with a headache, which is rare for me. It helped me get 6 hours of sleep.

Anyway, what I found to work for me are ALL of the following:

Minimize sugar

Hydration(water and electrolytes)

Stretching

Core exercises

Lower back exercises

Hanging from pull-up bar

Hold yourself up on a dip bar

Massage

Ice on your lower back/tailbone(feels like ice going through all your nerves, instant relief momentarily)

Chiro if you can(I usually have my kids try to crack my lower-mid back after a massage by walking on it or kneeling on it)

Obviously eating healthy

Try to prevent lower back from compressing(flex your core when laying down on your back and put a rolled towel under your hips when laying on your stomach)

I was prescribed Lyrica back in 2007 but stopped taking it in 2008 because we wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to take any meds anymore.

None of these are guaranteed to help. Everyone’s situation is a bit different, but definitely worth trying all of these things.

Edit: I seem to get it when I am sitting for too long of periods - whether it’s traveling, at a sporting event for the kids stuck in a gymnasium all day, when on my lawn mower or tractor and the terrain is a bit bumpy, when I have tightness in my lower back and I can’t even crack it, and mostly after I have something sugary (shakes) or drink alcohol. And it’s worse with the combination of any of those things.

I have issues with my L4/L5 and my hip popping out of place causing my sciatic nerve to be pinched. There have been times where walking was almost impossible, sitting was painful, sneezing sent jolts of lightning through my body. My chiropractor brought me back from the dead… Started 3 days a week and now down to once every 3 weeks, unless there’s a flare up. I hope you find something that helps you, I feel your pain brother.

you should watch ‘dopesick’ and see how the opioid epidemic really took off. It’s a dramatic retelling of how the sacklers made oxy and how they intentionally masked the dangers at every turn.

Had it been handled appropriately we might not be in this boat but corporate greed and influence absolutely got a bunch of people killed. So of course there was a massive overreaction because of ignoring it or actually promoting it even knowing the dangers.

It sucks because there were times we could’ve used more help with those as well. My wife is a kidney stone producer and she said it’s worse than the 2 kids she had (both kids came too fast for pain meds).

sorry about the sciatic. that’s really bizarre it would just pop up like that.

So, it’s been 5 full weeks. The pain is about 60% of what it was although I’m not even sure what’s made it any better.
I’ve logged probably 30 phone calls to doctors offices, specialist, and mostly insurance. Insurance is a fricking joke, they wanted me to do 6 weeks of PT before they’d approve a mri without considerationof my pain or how much it effected my life.

They denied my pcp’s requeat for a mri, my orthapedic physiatrist told me if my mri got denied to let him know so he could recommend one but insurance said that he’d have to wait 3 months because my pcp already submitted for the same mri. I had to call the insurance, explaining that 2 doctors are recommending for a mri yet I have some customer service person from India calling the shots on what is needed. Meanwhile, I cant stand on my feet for 5 minutes.

Anyways, finally had my mri on Thursday. I have a follow up with the specialist tomorrow on next steps, although I’m pretty certain that a back fusion is in my near future.

Our healthcare is a damn joke, 5 weeks in pain, no work, cant drive, and couldnt hardly get from one room to the next without having to lay down to relieve the pressure beforw they’ll approve a $2400 mri (which I was going to pay out of pocket if needed to get this process going).

I am following up with a guy who may know an underground MRI guy :joy::joy::joy:

But seriously it is someone who gives them on weekends for cash to keep machine rolling.

I need to actually run this down

That’s sucks brother…

I’m now much more grateful for my Tricare…

43,000 for my triple hernia repair and I’m only down for 1800.00… but my pcp was quick for my referral and that on the first visit produced my surgery date…. 19 days into recovery and I’m so freaking blessed I don’t deserve it… I just walked (with some intermediate jogging finally) five miles… crazy… my surgeon said yesterday he hasn’t seen anyone recovery so quickly and efficiently in just under three weeks… been walking three miles (slowly! And with manageable discomfort) every other day this last week or so

Prayer for you brother that this is resolved asap!
