And I could really see Skubal wanting to just get his deal done before any potential lockout so he doesn’t have to deal with that drama.
I could see that as well, could impact it both ways sign early or wait.
I think he is focusing his analysis on thr boras chris ilitch angle. Chris has yet to show a willingness to pay for top end talent. And boras is going to get the best lucrative deal for his client. It is what Boras does.
Well, til now Chris hasn’t had any top end talent to pay for, so it’s an assumption on his part, nothing more.
Agreed… Another reason to sign an extension now is to protect Skubal. He’s still 50 starts (1.5 seasons away) from free agency. If he waits, doesn’t sign, then blows out his arm next year. His 400 million dollar free agency offer is now off the table. And he’s looking at a short term deal coming off an injury. And yes I don’t wish that on any pitcher but they blow their arms out left and right these days.
So take the payday asap. It’s not like a position player waiting for free agency.
The dodgers have one in the minors i would love to find a way to get
Patrick Copen he is in high A ball but the dude looked filthy when i saw him pitch last saturday
Gave up 4 walks in 4 innings but he struck out 10 and got out of 2 bases loaded with 1 or no outs jams.
On the season he is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 9 starts and he has 73 strike outs which leads the league they are in… His walks are a little high but he definitley could be a fun one.
He is also 6’6 220 which would fit the way the Tigers have liked their pitchers
If we let him walk I’ll be livid. As previously mentioned, we already screwed this up with other great tigers pitchers.

Not the game i went to but this is some clips of him from a previous game
I finally went and read the barstool article linked in that tweet.
Guy is rivalling some of the Lions clickbait articles with this one.
Contradicts himself and his Pirate analogy fails as well. Oh well. first pitch in just under 4hours
Good to know…i dont know shit about baseball other then being a fan from a very far distance.
Reliever track for Copen, IMO. Control/command issues, long delivery. Not much of a 3rd pitch, fastball/slider guy with not a ton of feel.
I do appreciate the heads up, as my NL only league has 5 minor league slots, will be tracking.
I definitely can see him being a LR/5th starter
Who knows what happens.
We had a run last year… we are in the drivers seat this year…. We have him next year-
I would try and be buyers at the deadline, and add a piece or two to the lineup that just got Vierling back and is awaiting Meadows. Maybe some mid relief? Another rotational arm with team control?
This offseason Skubal will have monster trade value…
Midseason next year we will still have some solid value to Skubal…
In free agency next year they could get into the bidding war… many fear that- why? I won’t type the obvious reasons his value could tank…. Reasons that would be a killer just after committing to 200-300M…
I was listening to the Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg on Sirius today and he didn’t come out and say that they’re going to for sure try and resign school but pretty much everyone expects it this off season cuz they don’t want to let him get into next year and then come down to the idea of that they’re not going to get anything back from if he walks after that.
After they left him the conversation turned towards what kind of contract would he get or at least what kind of offer should he get from the Tigers to keep him out of free agency. What was referenced was the 9-year $327 million deal to Garrett Cole when he was in his age 28 season going on 29 so one year younger. This was also in 2020 so it’s been a little bit since then what wasn’t mentioned was yamamoto’s 325 million contract which I believe is over 10 years.
One of the hosts felt that a 10-year 350 million contract would get it done knowing you’re probably going to eat that last year minimum. I’d like to think that Skub would be happy with either the highest average annual value long-term pitcher contract or the highest total dollar amount pitcher contract but not both. I know the agent probably wants both because, well, that guy.
I think that $350 number probably is pretty accurate and I don’t much care if it’s given to him over 9 years or 10. The team literally could pay him that average annual value right now starting next year (10 now+15 Torres +15 Cobb) buying out a year of arbitration or at least bumping it up from an expected 20-ish-million.
This would pay him out also hopefully a little bit front end balanced instead of backend balanced. So the extra 20 next year and then start around 42 in the first 3 years then back down a little in the middle of 3 years then bring it back again the last 3 years. I hope he can’t say no to that
The agent is likely sitting on the 400 number… Each time Skub goes out there and dominates it’s leverage for him. Cole got 327 million but that was 5 years ago and contracts have exploded since. Opt outs could be an issue too. Cole had an out in his original deal.
I thought Soto would get 600 mill and he got close to 800 mill. These contracts are insane.
Vladdy got 500 million and might hit 20 homers… Might.
With Skubal playing at such a high level and his contract extension coming up, there is a lot of speculation over how high his deal will go. During an appearance on Pardon My Take, Skubal was asked by one of the hosts if he would accept a 10-year contract worth $425 million.
“That sounds good”
If there is a pitcher worth that much it’s Skubal…I guess.
It’s insane how much money these guys get paid.
At least you know the asking price… He said on camera he accepts 425… Tigers should offer 10 for 400 and I think he accepts. Do it now before he wins a 2nd Cy Young
