Bates and it’s not remotely close.

Jake Bates was found today bound and gagged with electrical tape. Vows to be ready to kick in two weeks.

Well, one we weren’t drafting at the top. Two, we didn’t have a ton of extra picks. Three we had traded picks in prior drafts and then we did the same to move up for Manu (I’m in the crowd who thinks it was foolish, but…). We had one major need and that was CB1 next to Davis. We doubled up with TA and Rakestraw. I probably wouldn’t have gone that route, but looking at the depth chart, I get it and it is a position that usually takes a while to learn. It wasn’t like we were going to start two rookies at outside CB. The middle picks of Mahogany and Wingo were IMHO awesome value picks that somewhat offset the project picks of Manu and Vaki. But no, this was not a draft where we were going to add 3-4 starters to this roster. No matter who we would have taken. We had room at CB, and sorry trusting Davenport was stupid and what happened was entirely predictable. Which is why EDGE is still our worst spot again this year.
But in a redraft… yes we could have moved around more. Verse has been a beast, but he went 5 picks higher than we traded up to for Arnold. If we did get that high, we probably would have gone with Mitchell anyway (boy he’s been reeeeeally good). So there was Chop meh. Then in the 2nd I loved Chris Braswell, but he and Kneeland both went 4 and 5 picks higher than when we picked Rakestraw. After that EDGE pretty much dropped off the map.
So I think this draft was “different.” But I think BH goes into a draft with a vision of what he wants to accomplish. When he takes guys like Jahmyr and Campbell, those are guys who are going to play a ton right away. Because those are positions that were taken much higher than they normally go. This draft was about getting a CB1 for now, a CB2 for later, then developmental guys to improve the talent within your depth. I’m silly, so I’d rather sell the farm at this point and get a couple stud starters and fill in the rest with the Benito Jones’ of the world, but BH is patient and hard to argue much about what he’s done to date. Mahogany looks like he can take over as a starter as soon as next year and Wingo a valuable sub at 3t and 5t.
He’s been on fire of late. Barnwell just named him his DROY over Verse and Mitchell.
I don’t typically like American chines but Chop Meh isn’t bad.
Interesting.
I’ve been thinking it’s because we lost our young All-Pro shoo-in early in the season.
Crazy how losing a guy who is on track to become DPOY at the Edge position and the starter opposite of him (though kinda expected) makes that room a lot worse!
Bates.
We are the #1 seed because of Jake Bates leg in Minnesota.
That’s just one game.
Leading scorer. That’s more points on the board than anyone else.
He was a young Pro Bowler last year. It’s hard to get by against elite teams with just one good EDGE that can rush the passer. Maybe in FA you back the truck up for say Hunter instead of scraps to Davenport. I like Alim, but IMHO we would be a better Dline in 2025 with: Hutch/Levi (Wingo)/Reader/Hunter with BroMart hopefully able to back up Reader at NT. When Hutch went down we could have still picked up Smith and rolled with the above. I’d like that better, even if Alim was available right now. That other rush DE spot was weak, but with Smith’s option picked up, that looks a lot better than what we’ve fielded this year. We’ll see. AG’s been pulling some rabbits so…
Jake Bates!!!
Yeah this was a tough draft, but who cares we are 15-2!
Terrion improved? Good? Nope…. 10 major penalties and no turnovers? The 51 rating… and no sacks or ints vs a ton of PENALTIES and SHIT TALK!
I was firmly on the…
2 years and 14M for Fuller instead of 1 yr and 14M plus a 3rd for CD3
I wanted Greenard for 4 yrs and 76m over paying 1 yr and 10M for Davenport
I had no idea what to make of Amik, but it was awesome! Reader saved the FA class along with Zietler.
Fiske
Beebe
Jarrian Jones
J McMillan
Mahogany
Wingo
That would have been my draft give or take. And given attacking power 5 guys, captains, and RAS would have jived with Brads previous drafts.
I wanted Fuller, Reader and Clowney.
CD3 proved to be a stud in our system it’s to bad we lost him.
To me Terrian Arnold looks like an absolute baller out there. He will improve. Even if he’s not a turnover machine he’s a sticky cover guy and asset in run defense.
I’ll root for Mikey & Dejean for their careers…wish we had them
Hope we can find a nickel in this draft
I liked all our picks not sure any should have been different. My point was holes were filled from the previous drafts so it’s hard for this class to get on the field. It’s a good issue to have.
Going forward we’ll lose a ton of talent we can’t afford to keep via FA or trade in which we’ll keep stockpiling draft picks. Also a good problem to have. This year we’ll probably focus on replacements for guys we know we cannot keep.
Definitely bates. Rookie breaks Hansen record??? Why is this a question.
Honestly hopefully this list ages well. At the one year point, not the impact of prior drafts. Point of consideration for draft position.
Where is our 4th round pick that we traded this years 3rd for? Couldn’t beat out Dan Skipper…not active once all year. We trades a third round last year for Carlton Davis. Wish we could have that pick back
CD has been worth it, although IMHO he will be “more” worth it IF we resign him to get more mileage from that 3rd round pick. Yes we also threw down a 2nd for Rakestraw, but I’d rather phase him in at a position where it’s good to have talented depth. Manu and BroMart however were appeal picks based on massive size / athleticism traits, but very little on tape saying they would be good football players. Thus far, nothing has changed that narrative and 3rd round picks used to acquire those two should deliver more than players who are perennial gameday inactives. Manu is a rookie, so still some hope for him, but when BroMart can’t even be a backup NT on a team that only has 1 NT, well that pick has been crap thus far.
Cannot have any qualms about the OVERALL results from BH. They are stellar and have resulted in us resting this week. But I do feel it’s ok to nitpick where it’s reasonable to do so. It’s reasonable to criticize the BroMart pick at this point in the process. I also feel you shouldn’t have too many project picks on a SB team. There just isn’t room and you start shaving talent elsewhere to keep guys like BroMart/Manu - then you’ve got Hooker AND Bridgewater who (hopefully) won’t play. Hooker also cost a high pick and at this point, you still can’t trust him. Otherwise you could have waited on Teddy until tragedy strikes.
That would have been nice too.
He won 3 games himself. He takes the Gold.
