Can’t wait for Jamo to catch a felony ‘flipping a ball at an opponent’ charge.
I think we think very differently. You are very focused on not provoking the provokable. My mind goes to if you throw the first punch you are the cause of the actual violence.
“You made me do what I did” just isn’t my thing.
Now we’ve both seen the most ridiculous thing we’ve seen all day in this thread.
We’re setting some records here today, I guess.
PS - Flipping a ball at another player is a penalty. Why? We know why.
Unsportsmanlike is unsportsmanlike.
Again, I think a flag or a suspension should suffice for this situation. Once cops are pulling out weapons and stuff though, I can understand why those who create laws around safety might start sniffing around this stuff.
Doesn’t mean I support or want it…but I get it.
PSS - No more than 2 minutes ago you liked a comment saying my comparison was illogical when I used an analogy…then you reply with this.
I like you and your posts a lot but…wtf? lol.
One requires an act of violence and the other doesn’t? Come on now.
Fair enough!
I do believe in cause and effect principles.
I get where you’re coming from though for sure. There’s an infinite amount of cases where I’d agree with you 100%.
In this scenario though, and with several other postgame scenarios, I do tend to think there have been cases where a straw has broke the camel’s back. In some of these cases, I get why we’d want to collectively remove the straw from future situations, especially if we’ve got a track record.
They would have to win first. And it they do…they can try…
Playing football you are taught to honor and respect the institution you play for. The logo is revered. Your stadium is your turf and its hallowed ground. I don’t like the flag plant. Any team that does it. Its not an OSU v Michigan thing. Its simply beyond the pale sportsmanship wise.
This post was meant for FRM sorry.
Here’s the thing. It was not the flag that caused the fight, it was the frustration at the 4th loss. Did planting a flag rub it in? Oh you bet it did, but it wasn’t the cause.
If you flag plant, its almost expected violence will follow. Especially when its done in front of the other team after a defeat. It doesn’t excuse the violence, but its sort of like the reason “fighting words” are prohibited by law.
Maybe they should make it a felony for any opposing team to win in Columbus.
Or you plant the flag and the losing team beats them next season to prevent it.
Similar to Oregon in AA and Texas in AA, no fights, no pepper spray or threats of tasing. They won, plant the flag, and its over.
No, as I said post UM/OSU game not in favor of this whole flag thing.
For all said in this thread, the answer is very simple which has been posted a few times in the thread.
Would the fight have happened without it?
Would Teague has smashed TO’s face in before TO planted the ball on the star?
Is it safe to say there’s a level of unsportsmanlike behavior that inevitably leads to unsportsmanlike conflict?
Only when in Columbus
Would the fight have happened without the win? Without the flag? The only thing I know for certain is the fight doesn’t happen without the first punch.
Its not the same. I keep hearing that, but you know that the victory means more, its more personal, and it hurt a lot for the Buckeyes to lose that game. You do that in front of them to rub it in, then expect the worst. I’m surprised it wasn’t worse than it was. But in any case, just because violence doesn’t break out does not excuse the act as something that should be tolerated in front of the other team.
It is, where is this stated?
How many fights have happened when flags have been planted in the past? Two examples in 2024 in AA of it not happening.
So, where do you get this “almost to be expected” from?
I mean, in Columbus where losing 4 in a row to UM justifies every reaction sure…but that is Columbus not the rest of the country.
I argue no, it wouldn’t have.
Precisely.
Fights like that don’t break out after wins 99.9% of the time.
Fights like that can and do break out after unsportsmanlike behavior though.
There is a massive, massive canyon between these 2 things. They are not like each other.
Edit - I’m done posting on this topic. I think we’ve all made our points.
As always, no hard feelings - just enjoying discussing things with you guys but want to step out before I’m ready to plant a flag myself.
Yea, I get it it’s an issue in Columbus, because…
Just ban it as I’ve said.
I don’t remember violence when it was Baker Mayfield. But also, what he did was bush.
Fixed it.
I’m not into planting flags, but like I said in another thread, I’m not in my late teens/early 20s. I have a different view of sports and competition in general than I did in my teens. It’s part of growing. I try to keep that in mind when looking at this stuff. I can see banning the practice, but I’m not ever going to agree with the “you made me do what I did” argument. No, that’s a terrible life lesson.
