Another factor is the draft… Lets say we don’t trade Hooker before the draft. Then draft a qb. Hooker might then get traded during the draft. Like when we drafted Gibbs and Swift was traded the next day…
Hooker coming into a regular season game and looking good with the starters would be nice, but my worry is that he won’t. Our offense is such a fine tuned machine with Goff that there’s no way Hooker could come in and match that. So my expectation is that the offense would look out of sorts and less efficient with Hooker.
In a small corner of my brain I’m thinking we may be better off with having that unknown factor of Hooker in play than putting him out on the field and having things come crashing down with a poor performance.
Yea he really is an unknown cause of the injury and how little he has played. That’s why I don’t think another team will give us much right now. Even when he did play last preseason, he got concussed. Think he’s played 2 preseason games and a handful of garbage time regular season snaps. Essentially nothing.
It could be argued that the Walsh circumstance would be even worse than the Hooker situation. He played snaps, I don’t know how meaningful they were, but he was pretty brutal. No one really knows what we have in Hooker at this point. If I was another team, I would certainly be more inclined to give up a second round pick for Hooker than a first, second, and third round pick for Steve Walsh. Especially based on his performance in those eight games he played. Personally, I would not give up Hooker for a fourth round pick at this point. Not that I think he’s the second coming or anything like that, but we do have a third round pick invested in him as well as a year of rehabbing and another year of coaching. At this point, we would be selling an unknown commodity at a price below what we paid. I suspect he’s a much better prospect now, age not withstanding, than he was two years ago when we spent a third on him. If he was in fact, a first round talent (debatable but I see way more first round than third round evaluations ) and we got him in the third, why would we sell low? If they do decide to make this trade, then obviously the coaches see something that has not yet been revealed to us. I would bet Tennessee would give us a second round pick for him. I guess time will tell.
I think Brett Favre is a better comparison to Hooker than Walsh was. He had only thrown 4 passes and didn’t complete not a one other than two INTs and one of those was a pick-6. But the Packers traded for him and gave up a 1st round pick. It ended up being very worth it though!
What style offense did Favre play in college?

Was called the Dick Pic Air Raid Express.

I honestly don’t remember. Did he go to Mississippi State? No it was Southern Miss. But I think he pulled off some upsets over some big time teams
Fair enough, as I don’t either.
My point being without knowing the scheme Favre played in it’s difficult to make an analogy to HH.
Pretty much comes to this. In two years will there be more value in a 30 year old QB who hasn’t played any reps? If I got a 4th I would definitely take it.
Guys like Dalton, Mariota, Winston, Locke and others made 3-6M…. All of them and Rudolph, Mac Jones, J Fields etc are out there. I would pay 4-5M to any of them and I’d trade a 7th and Hooker for a 3rd in a heartbeat.
I would take J Fields or Mac Jones and a guy like E Roberts, Burch, etc over Hooker and a retread DE

I think in 2 years he will be leaving via free agency and we will have lost all leverage outside of hoping for a comp pick.
Why would the Lions shed a draft prospect who they knew would be groomed for a backup QB role year so soon?
A team would have to offer more than a net loss of draft stock
@TNutZz i don’t think the draft pick used matters once the draft is done. We took an older, injured QB with potential who hasn’t really had a chance to show his ability. He has, however, gotten older, and closer to free agency. He has also shown in limited opportunities that the team trusts a veteran backup who was coaching HS football over him.
In the end, we have the chance to reset the backup QB clock by picking a new developmental one. Heck it seems like as long as we are contending, neither one would play anyway.

Good points. But I would submit they knew his scheme limitations, age and injury than they took him. They had a plan and there’s no reason to deviate from it unless he’s been a complete turd
Sure they have solidified their trust in Goff but you never know what can happen. Goff has been healthy pretty much his entire career, but all of that can change in one play as we’ve seen Time and Time again.
If the return is just a fourth round pick Id rather not lose the backup we have been grooming

Oh we were just talking about the relative inexperience of the two when they started out in the NFL. I wasn’t comparing their college careers. How Favre had only thrown 4 passes his rookie year and all were incompletions compared to Hooker who hasn’t played a meaningful snap in the NFL
Oh Favre was traded for a 1st round pick even though he hadn’t done anything at the pro-level. Doesn’t mean Hooker will draw the same compensation

Yep, of course, and I think all of us would agree that having a stable backup QB on the roster is necessary.
But I think you’re a business owner in Portland, and as a business owner must have a forward thinking skill set. When that forward thinking comes into play how exactly do you see Hendon Hookers time with the Lions playing out?
Not bashing you in any way, just curious what your long term plans is with Hooker.
If the plan is to just keep him on the roster to the very end and then let him leave via free agency in hopes for some type of comp pick I see that as a viable option. The only thing I don’t like about that is then having to wait until the 2028 draft to realize that return.

After reaching out to team sources at both franchises, they both felt their teams would be willing to trade their young backups for a fourth-round pick.
Clearly they talked to the wrong person with the Lions.

I don’t have all the information to make a call like that. i’m just saying, they knew his age his injury and the timeline when they drafted him. So if they’re willing to move on from now, there must be a turd factor that emerged
