'Tell those guys to be careful:' How Detroit Lions pieced together LB corps after injuries

Yeah Barnes is a really good fit at SAM. He’s improved is off ball skills and he’s got pass rush ability. Also he’s a fantastic culture fit. He would be a priority signing if it were me.

You left out Shaun Dion Hamilton, the current assistant LB coach who they apparently love. So that’s 2 more comp beans. Insert him between Shep and Kwon. Shep to DC, SDH to LB coach, Kwon to assistant LB coach.

Don’t overlook Montgomery.
It’s a long shot that he will get a job, but I think Scottie Montgomery will get a couple of Head coach interviews this cycle.

Right but this was just about the LB coaches.

I’ll be shocked. I think that we’d like to go 2 or even 3 years being that we’re buying low but I think Barnes and his representatives will want a one year deal to reset his market.

Sooo next year we get 3 comp beans for Agnew & Glenn

Later

3 for Shep + Scottie
2 for SDH
2 for Kwon

We good until 2035

We can ALWAYS trade up from end of round 1 now.

Also side note we have Zdarius for 2025 and then in 2026 we sign Hendrickson

DE across from Hutch is covered

It really is amazing how well this defense is playing and overcoming adversity. It just feels like nothing can stop this team. Big credit goes to the entire coaching staff but I’m most impressed with what AG has done.

100% agree with all of this.

Barnes brings a lot to the defense and AG has had to simplify his packages. So far it hasn’t hurt us much and I suspect Adams along with the combination of LBers we can bring in our full playbook.

I was expecting Barnes to have a huge year but injuries derailed that. What fans are missing is SLB is where Barnes is best suited to play but due to weaknesses in our LBer corp Barnes has been forced to play inside more.

I expect us to attempt to bring Barnes back. Hopefully he fits the budget

It’s crazy how good Barnes has become. He totally surpassed the player I thought he could become but I don’t know why people keep saying he’s some great pass rusher. Like, he wasn’t that good at it in college and he’s not very good at it now.
He’s been great against the run and has gotten better at pass coverage but pass rushing, not so much.

PFF agrees with me. Not sure if that means I’m right or wrong.

Who was that ROLB we got later in his career that was really good?..he played at Michigan State. I can’t remember his name.

You are one of my favorite, and most knowledgeable posters on this board, but I’m not sure I agree with this stance.

Barnes was an exciting specimen when drafted. Then looked lost and out of place as a rookie. He improved a bit each year, and then…

He has 8 QB hits and 4 sacks in 4 years and 2600 snaps.

Rodrigo and Nowaske combine for more sacks and QB hits in about half that many snaps…

Undrafted FA Ivan pace has more sacks and twice as many QB hits in less than half Barnes snaps.

Settle down CAP

It’s not a stance, it’s the way they’re actually used by us. Rodrigo doesn’t rush from the outside like Barnes does, he blitzes. VERY different. Ivan Pace is the same. Barnes is basically part edge, part LB. That’s what we want out of a SAM. Not a lot of guys can do that.

Nowaske has been used in a similar way and is probably the closest replacement, but he’s not an edge rusher either.

Barnes’ Arm Length is 33 3/8 and he had three years of collegiate experience with his hand in the dirt. So different level of edge setter than your normal LBer profile.

Pass rush too. I know it’s in there. Absolute missile in pursuit in the run game. Seemed to become less of a liability in coverage recently.

Good player. And a hard to find type of good player.

Looks like former probowler Devondre Campbell might be cut soon.

Rodrigo is suuuuch a great addition to this team - major ‘glue’ player. We need to retain him. High football IQ, perfect locker room guy, opportunistic, great tackler (yes, even for a linebacker). He’s a leader that is a perfect ‘next man up’ guy

Uh oh.

I guess a good record doesn’t save me from all the Cap-Master 5000 talk
