Texans seem to be setting up for tanking for 2023 draft

One second interview with a guy who has been a defensive coordinator for one season:

Another second interview with a guy who has never been a coordinator in the NFL:

Tanking in 2022 for a top QB to replace Deshaun Watson in the 2023 draft? What else could it be?

If they were tanking why didn’t they keep Culley?

McCown was a NFL QB for 18 years and mostly worked on being a “mentor” for younger QBs for a good portion of his career. Florio is ripping the move because he has not been a “coach” in the NFL… yet a lot of the media guys advocate for having a veteran QB to “coach up” the young starter.
McCown played in 102 games where the play caller told him the play directly.
He was on the sideline standing near the HC for another 150+ NFL games.

Zac Taylor is 4 years younger than McCown, and never played in the NFL.
Taylor had 6 years of exposure to the NFL before becoming a HC.
Taylor was an OC for 5 games in the NFL before Cinci hired him.

Matt LaFleur never played NFL football… and called plays for 1 year before Packers hired him.
He is the same age as McCown.

Arthur Smith called plays for 2 years with Titans, and played 1 college football game.
He is 3 years younger than McCown.

McCown would be entering a terrible franchise and is likely doomed if he gets the job… but I am not sure it has much to do with his lack of “official” coaching experience. The guy has been right in the middle of NFL decision making longer than most 1st time HCs.

Didn’t Davis Mills far exceed all expectations and show he could potentially be a good starting QB?

I think that Mills played well enough for them not to draft a QB this year. I honestly think he is going to be the guy. He did nothing but improve throughout the year.

Peak Easterby.

Culley was only hired because he had zero chance of ever getting another head coaching gig. This would make him grateful just to have the job, and do whatever he’s asked to do to keep the job. At the end of Culley’s tenure he started to try to make some of his own decisions. That’s not gonna fly with Easterby, so they let him go. The reason why you are seeing “unqualified” guys front and center in their coaching search is for the same reason. They want someone super appreciative and willing to do whatever Easterby wants. Its not about winning and losing to Easterby, its about control, loyalty, and building the team in his image.

BC he won too many games with sh!tty roster?
