Yep, this is just a horrible idea suggesting that fans have the right to throw stuff on the field if there’s a bad call that they don’t agree with, blatant or not.
There would literally be shit flying out of the stands almost every play, especially in college football with the student sections.
I don’t think the OP really thought this one through all the way.
Notice how nothing else got thrown on the field the entire rest of that game.
It’s only the blatant misses that I think the fans should hold the refs accountable for. Even Georgia fans knew that wasn’t PI. The only person in the entire world who thought that was PI happened to also be the only one who had the ability to call it.
I don’t advocate for people throwing shit on the field just because. I don’t think people should throw shit on the field for a toss up call they don’t like. I don’t think people should throw shit on the field when their team is losing.
I only think that fans should rightfully hold the officials accountable when they fundamentally fail to do the job we pay them to do. Period.
Or you can just have the refs review flags like they do touchdowns instead of advocating people throwing stuff onto the field possibly putting the health of the people on the field at risk.
Sorry, i just can’t agree with you on this for many reasons.
Terrible idea to throw ANYTHING ON TO THE FIELD SURFACE!
This is a game
Someone is going to get seriously hurt. Remember Orlando Brown?
Terrible precedent to set for future sporting events. This is more unfortunate as this was such a high profile game. This behavior will be copied by other home crowds that disagree with a call.
The refs got the call right (IMO), but at what cost? That ONE PLAY is not worth all the trouble that will inevitably follow.
Toothpaste is out of the jar now…no going back. Get used to trashy fields and delay of games.
I completely agree with you, and earlier in this thread, I advocated for the addition of a sky judge that is reviewing stuff like this in real time to correct these errors.
People throwing shit on the field is a real problem, and needs to be addressed ASAP before it becomes a bigger problem than it already is. Officials fundamentally failing to do their job over and over again is also a big problem, and throwing officials behind a shield instead of holding them accountable is why the fans stepped in last night.
It’s past time that the NCAA and the NFL implement a sky judge to assist with these kinds of mistakes.
And every home team needs to be assessed a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct ON TOP OF a 5 yard delay of game if their fans do this.
Texas still would’ve gotten the ball at the 29 yard line if the home crowd would’ve been penalized.
Oh Bob, I don’t know about that call, looks like the refs missed it, let’s see if the replay booth is going to have a look, no it doesn’t look like they’re going to review, and the offense is trying to quickly get up to the line of scrimmage and snap the ball, oh wait, here comes the flying debris…
This is the ONLY message that will be received by fans.
One or two rule enforcements, and this problem would be gone forever. Imagine a fan throws a bottle and you hear a record scratch, with 1,000 angry faces staring at you…then someone yells “GET EM!!”.
You can’t enforce that rule. I’d go to away games and wear the other teams colors and jersey and throw shit on the field. You cant penalize 90,000 fans for the actions of 1,000 people, plus there’d probably be rioting if the refs announced a forfeiture for this.
The only real solution is a sky judge. That’s all we want. That’s all we’ve wanted for the past 7 or 8 years.
I have no idea why they haven’t implemented a sky judge into officiating crews. It’s almost like they’re complacent with the bad calls that happen all the time.
(And for the record, I believe the only job of the sky judge should be to overrule flags that are thrown using expedited replay assistance)
You do that by refusing your business, not assaulting the ref crews.
You sound like the kind of asshole who treats service people like shit because they forgot to ring up “no pickles” on your burger and instead of just taking the pickles off yourself when you get the burger or politely letting them know about the mistake, you decide to go throw the burger in the workers face to prove a point because you think you own them because you paid $10 for a burger.
Very fair point. I have to agree with you on that.
Funny enough, that’s the exact opposite of what I’d do. I’m the one telling everyone around me to cut people some slack, and that the service people are doing the best they can do.
I never thought of this situation like that.
I think I’ve just been personally burned so many times by the outcomes of bad calls (as both a Lions and Ohio State fan) that I relate so well to the outrage felt by the Texas students last night.
