The State of the Division...NFCN

So now that the draft is done, and we have our rosters mostly established, I would like to know what you guys see. You cats know rooks better than I do, and mostly know dudes from other teams better than I do. Most of you watch more NFL than me, as I watch Lions games multiple times, but usually only see other teams when they play against us.

How are the teams in our division looking?

I would love to see your break-downs and/or insights on areas of imporvement and regression of our division, especially non-Lion teams.

For our guys, I think we improved at every level on both sides of the ball.
Lion offense → Backup QB more experienced, as well as additional backup added
→ RB improved with Gibby’s expanded route tree, another year’s experience for Vaki, and a healthy Monty returning
→ Push at OL…With the loss of V, may not be quiiite as good starting OL, but with GG hopefully being pushed to a backup role, we may have better depth, and by mid-season, or so, better OL continuity
→ WR improved with addition of Teslaa. Better depth (including TE in this)

Lion Defense → DL MASSIVELY improved on health alone. Hoping the rook can step in and amply cover Alim’s missing games, and that Alim can return to form by playoffs. Healthy Hutch is huge (in Trump voice). Health of Davenport et al (and hopefully Z) will be massive too
→ LB improved with AA coming back, another year under big Jack’s belt, and a healthy Barnes…with great backups, this position group feels improved as well
→ DBs are improved on health alone, mixed in with another year for Arnold. Safeties should be crazy good, and CB depth should be much improved as well as top end for starters.

What do you guys think of Chicago? Vikings? Packers?
Would love to see your insights as well as your division rankings! Thanks in advance men!
I’ve got

3 - Bears

I see two unproven QB’s (bears, vikings), one decent QB (not named Aaron Rodgers or Brett Farve), and one proven QB that has been to the playoffs six out of nine years.
Detroit is the top dog, until knocked off the mountain top.

The division is weaker than it has been IMO. I don’t expect much from the Vikes and their rookie QB who I really question his decision making. The Bears still have Caleb. And it appears a lot of us overrated Jordan Love. I suppose Love could have a bounce back season. The Vikes and Bears don’t have a chance. Smells like an easy Lions win to me.

I would LOVE to see JJ fail miserably, as well as a massive flop form Ben Johnson and his boys.

I’m with many of you in thinking Jordan L is overrated (couldn’t bring myself to say “Love is overrated”.

I know some ppl who swear by JJ, but they are all UofM fans. Do they know him better from having studied him more? …Or are they a bunch of homers? LOL. I hope he flops massively and I don’t care where he went to school.

Love’s 2nd half of 2023 was incredibly good. I was really worried. 2024 was very welcome in that he’s a quality starter but not another mega star Rodgers type of player.

I would have taken Bo Nix over JJ. I was hoping for the Bears to take Caleb and the Vikes to take JJ. They did exactly what I wanted. And my opinion has not changed.

I would say its a mixer between being a homer and he does have some game in him. I think he will be fine in Minnesota

Nothing is easy in the NFL. We had the best paper team in the league last season.

Yup what matters is what the team looks like at the end of the season. If the same amount of injuries to “key” players happens again then expect the same result.

We have a team that plays a very precise system. When teams take that away from us we’re in trouble, the best teams play better than us in chaos. I think we’re a bit of a regular season team TBH.

I thought Chicago should have traded down. They could have gone down 1 spot and taken Harrison and then taken JJ (a kid that grew up in Chicago) at #9.

JJ + Harrison > Caleb & Odunze IMO. When you toss in the extra pick Chicago would have gotten for moving down, it makes it a clear win for Chicago.

I’m not on the JJ wagon. Didn’t really see him as a 1st round pick even.

I would counter that against average teams, we could mask our poor defense with ball control and scoring, putting pressure on them.

Against good offenses, they were able to apply the pressure back and expose how bad our defense really was.

We scored 31 points vs Washington and 42 vs Bills. A playoff caliber defense should be able to hold our opponent under 30 points. Washington and Buffalo both lost in playoffs because their defenses allowed their opponents to score 30+ (Buffalo gave up 32 to KC and Washington gave up 55 to Philly).

Brad has had 7 1st round picks and used 4 of them on defense (DT, CB, DE, LB). We’ve had 6 2nd round picks and used 4 of them on defense (DT, DE, DB, CB).

Injuries were brutal last year. If relatively healthy this year, we should be top 5 defense (we were #7 scoring defense last year).

Likely top 3 offense and top 5 defense should put us in prime position for another great season.

We’re a contender for sure. I see a lot of similarities between Goff and Peyton Manning. Some similarities between us and Manning’s Colts. We’re not soft like the Colts were but we have a similar reliance on a system. But Goff is not Manning level either. We have the killer o-line that will always make us a tough out for teams. This team really all starts with that o-line. Glad to see the Lions get that.

I think the 2025 NFC North is going to be a closer division, and everyone is going to take a step back in terms of wins simply due to a much tougher schedule. Everyone in our division feasted on the fact we played both the AFC South, and a weaker than expected NFC West. I think 11 wins does take the division title.

I rewrote the standings 3 different times already because I think the bottom 3 teams will all be within 2 games of each other.

For Green Bay, I think their offense has a chance to take a step forward but their defense is still bad to awful. They had a worse pass rush than we did last year and didn’t do much to address it. They will win games by outscoring teams, but that will also lead to more Jordan Love picks. They also still have the Jaire Alexander problem. They should’ve traded him and gotten anything, but instead they opted to kiss his ass, and now he will immediately check out at the first opportunity with some injury that no one knows why it’s keeping him out all year.

The Vikings have a very good defense, but the Lions still have them by their achilles heel which is a smart quarterback and the ultimate pressure defense gamebreaker, Jahmyr Gibbs. These games are always tough battles, but there is a reason why the Lions have won the past 5 games and average over 30 points. Add in that you now have JJ starting for his first season. I see JJ as almost a Goff lite, at Michigan he was a great play action QB, made clutch big throws when needed and could scramble if everything else breaks down. Minnesota isn’t a good playaction team though. Their running game sucks, and you have to constantly feed Jefferson to keep him happy. That puts a lot of pressure on the QB, especially a young one. Vikings offense has a lot of mouths to feed and I wonder how JJ will handle it. At any rate, it’s tough for a first year QB to win and with a tough schedule, I think they are going to hit some struggles but also win enough games to give real hope for next year.

Chicago is still Chicago. I don’t think Chicago is building a good team at all, and I am thrilled to see it. I actually see the Bears as reminding me of the Bob Quinn Lions era. They are trying to make splashes, and ignoring the meat and potatoes side of football. They took a clown to be their franchise QB, because according to the draft experts, he looks like the guy they were supposed to draft originally. They signed a new Head Coach to try to make the QB look like an NFL player by copying what he did in Detroit. They passed on a better TE to get a guy to be their next LaPorta. How many times did we see bad Lions teams try to mimic successful teams, and watch it blow up in our faces?
Their offensive line should be somewhat better than last year, but that line also got a terrible rap due to their QB constantly breaking the pocket to run around and play Caleb ball. Nothing has changed there. Their running game is still weak, they’ve spent a ton of cap space, and with only 5 picks they aren’t going to get much in the way of depth. I think the Bears will be some better due to better talent, but the high cost of that talent is going to cap their growth potential. The fact this team drafted Luther Burden, who apparently was terrible with his attitude last season and in team interviews, adds another primadonna to the mix. So add in a mental midget at quarterback who can do no wrong, another headache WR to pair with DJ Moore who checked out of last year and all of this being led by a first time head coach who will be expected to bring immediate results, and who by many accounts has his own ego and attitude, and I see a recipe for disaster.
The only Bears player I truly feel bad for is Rome Odunze. I think he is a great player stuck in a horrible place. The rest, I will gladly put my feet up and watch the show.

Also, I will save a certain poster the trouble.

“The Minnesota Vikings are winning the division.”

Honest opinion as another u of m fan.

JJ has a good arm and athletic profile, can win a lot of plays on that alone, but soo many times he goes late over the middle high which is the ultimate sin for a qb. Couldnt connect on a lot of out break routes deep and relied on his TE’s, slot, and rbs to make plays.

I loved jj but i always cringed seeing him getting chased around the pocket and throwing late over.the middle. Never really hurt us and he got better in the championship season but is that because we removed burden on him by having a heavy running attack?

I think he may be successful and is really gited i question the decision making and whether he can hold up if he wants to play hero ball in the nfl.
