shouldn’t be an “If Goff or - if Stafford does better thing.” we hope both do well. BECAUSE we’re Lions’ fans, we hope Goff has a fantastic season here. no doubt.
bc Matt Stafford was our QB for 11 years but moved to play for the Rams? doesn’t mean he’s GOT to be hated now , or there needs to be high hopes that he gets killed over across the pond.
The Lions hurt his chances of being far better and were like a damn anchor around his neck his entire career many people had a hand in it and very few truly helped him- from the GM’s to the DC’s to the HC’s, to the ownership and leadership (if you can call it that) $#@^ . ironic it looks like we have the 1st quality staff EVER and Stafford isn’t here… but He’s a Ram and it is what it is. I truly hope BOTH QB’s kick ass !
Stafford has thrown 13+ INTs in 5 seasons… and had 5 more years of 10-12 INTs.
Big Ben has thrown 13+ in 8 years.
Brees did it 10 times.
Peyton Manning… also 10 times.
Eli Manning had 12 years with 13+ INTs.
Rivers did it 8 seasons.
Marino… 12 years.
Elway had 10 of them.
Jim Kelly did it 9 times.
Andrew Luck. 4 out of 5 years he played >7 games.
Luck had 12 INTs in 7 games in 2015.
Kurt Warner… 6 times. He only played >10 games in a season 6 times… and threw 13+ INTs every year.
Steve Young threw 13+ in 2 years… out of only 6 years he played >12 games. Counting his rookie year in Tampa, he had 4 more years he was “on pace” to throw 13 or more.
Joe Montana… 3 times. But he only started 10+ games in 10 years. He had 4 other years he was “on pace” to throw 13+ INTs, but he didn’t play enough games.
In fairness, though, the game has changed since a lot of those guys you listed have played. The passing game has become more precise, and the number of interceptions has declined, even as the number of passing attempts has gone up.
Now, I would attribute much of this to pussification of NFL coaches and coordinators. It’s become vogue to throw a jillion little 3 yard passes and avoid downfield passes. That only works if you cut interception rates, because the reward of a 5-yard pass doesn’t warrant the risk of a turnover.
I can live with the risk of higher interception rates if the reward is regular chunk yardage for the offense. Goff’s last two years, though, have seen his air yards per attempt drop while his interceptions simultaneously went up.
