Three Days In…Where are the Lions?

I don’t think Brad will just sit with all this cap space. We will just wait and wait and then Brad will sign someone to a deal that makes us all think it was a value buy.

Kinda getting a weird feeling Kupp may be coming to DET as WR 3. Patrick should have been signed by now.

If he comes here it will be as WR4 imo.

Which is why I doubt he comes here.

Behind who at #3?

Someone who won’t compress the field like Kupp would. That’s the opposite of what we want to do with Goff. They’ve been great together, but with Kupp - prime Kupp - in the ARSB role. He’s NOT an X WR.

I really don’t see kupp here.

I have a hard time believing he could not be as productive in the Patrick role from last year.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have Tim back.

But the size/speed ratio is similar at this point in their careers. And Brad would have been in the room when they drafted Kupp, right?

Raymond is the lock for #4. Not sure why Patrick couldn’t agree to terms after resurrecting his career in DET and thus accepting a reasonable deal from Brad as the #3.

This tells me, and I could be completely off here of course, that maybe Brad has his eyes on Cooper.

He might be able to put up similar numbers, but he really won’t be able to do the things we asked Tim to do. Or maybe he could, but they aren’t the strengths of his game. You don’t sign Kupp and ask him to run clear-out routes and deep crossers.

He operates best in the same close-in area of the field as ARSB, LaPorta and Gibbs. You’ll almost never find Patrick there and that’s for good reason, it screws with our spacing. And Goff is a timing and spacing QB.

The speed maybe, but not the size. Patrick is much taller/longer.

You won’t see me disputing our connection to Kupp. Both Brad and Goff know him well. But to me it won’t be anywhere near enough to bring him in. He just doesn’t fit with the way we’re constructed.

Agreed, which is yet another reason I don’t think we bring Kupp in.

It’s possible I’m way off, but IF we bring him in, we’ll have to really reconfigure the offense, and I just don’t see us doing that.

Yeah, I had Patrick at 6’3 until I looked it up. So Kupp is a couple of inches shorter.

But I don’t see how the offense would have to change a lick with Kupp in an X role. He’s just running different routes. I don’t see how that would be a problem for him. In fact, I would guess he’d be a bit better at getting open in the X role than Patrick. And provide more YAC, although that’s not the X receiver role to a T.

To ask him to suddenly do something he hasn’t done his whole career? I mean, maybe. But I suspect HE’LL want to go somewhere he can play the role he knows.

His role would be to work his way downfield based on how he reads the coverage, right? And block in the run game.

I dunno, again, I might be dreaming here.

Maybe the Lions have a roughed-in deal with Patrick and are just waiting for him to accept.

Okay. Levi back, Zeitler gone. Added a LBer.

DT:
Reader, Levi, Lopez and Myles Adams healthy. McNeil and Wingo healing. BroMart outside looking in? Could still add a top rookie.

OL:
Decker, Mahogany, Ragnow, Graham, Sewell, Manu, Muti and Dan Skipper. Likely another depth guy and San has options before the draft.

Could draft an interior OL guy early, edge early or anything. Well done Holmes.

Looks like Levi and Lopez combined got what Zeitler got to go to TN. Perfect decision.

Easier to replace Zeitler than Levi/Lopez as McNeil heals.

Levi, Davenport, Lopez one year deals. Gotta keep drafting well.

The pressure to draft well never ends. Chance to add cheap talent.

Four days in… are the Lions better or worse?

Injuries still linger at DT but no talent loss there and we added Roy Lopez. Feels like a push/better when Slim is back to normal?

Safety: lost Iffy, no replacement yet.

LBer: lost Jalen Reeves Maybin but also added a couple LBers. Feels like a push with Barnes back.

OL: list Zeitler, no replacement. Easiest to replace with Mahogany. Skipper back. Feels like a loss here but not significant.

CB: Davis is Reed. Feels like a push.

DE: Marcus for Smith feels like a downgrade as we cannot count on Marcus Davenport (new Moseley).

TE/QB/RB the same. Missing Tim Patrick at WR. Feels like a loss until that spot is filled.

Overall feels like a slight talent loss but with solid talent holds at LBer/CB/DT.

Keeping Levi helps with DT depth. Keeping Barnes is big. Signing Reed is big. Overall talent loss but not significant. Still moves to be made.
