Tigers vs A's: July 7-9 : Harris dilemna, trade or keep Skubal

Melton was electric last night against a really good hitting team. It seems like he gets better with every start.

Future ace!

Montero has been a rock in relief. He hasn’t given up a run since the switch. If we only had a true shutdown closer to go with him our bully would look dramatically different.

I think a nice little Flaherty for Paredes could be a good trade

Houston gets the pitching they need and we get a 3B

(I chose Flaherty because he is only signed through this year and of the options from the pitching he would be easiest to replace)

We could then trade a prospect for Minter for the Bullpen

We fix 3b and help with the bullpen with trading Flaherty and a prospect

One thing to be worried about Paredes is he is the most extreme pull hitter in the major leagues as far as home runs go which is what you’re getting him for.

If you take a look at his 2026 home run spray chart in Figure 2 and the dimensions of Comerica Park in figure 1, he’s going to lose for sure three of those home runs. The shortest one down the line is 314 ft and the two short ones in left / left Center are at 330 and 335, while the two that are offset next to them to their left even closer to left field are at 350 and 355 which are iffy.

Not every game is going to be in Comerica Park but the point stand that he plays in a very Homer friendly ballpark down the left field line which is why the Astros got him in the first place, and he has done this type of spray chart every single year in his career. Just a buyer beware kind of thing. I’m not saying I wouldn’t do the deal because now all of a sudden we look like we have too much starting pitching and not enough Third Base so I get it and he’s right-handed so I double get it.

In 2024 they were in a similar spot

also it wasnt so much the tigers played well (that helped) it was that the Twins fell apart. They went 12-28 down the stretch.

Thats what the tigers need in the last 1/4 of the season. Other teams to implode. Not counting on that again

There is a HUGE difference between being 10 games back with 44 games remaining…. and 4 games back with 70 games left.

Tigers have 70 games remaining right now.

In 2024, they had 44 games left.

They went 31-13 in their final 44 games!!!

That is a .700 winning percentage… or a 114-game pace!

I don’t believe you. Put it in a spreadsheet or it isn’t real.

Yea the Twins went 0.300 and tigers went 0.700 BOTH had to happen for the tigers to make it.

And a few other teams have fell apart to like Seattle.

Tigers need to go 0.600+ for the rest of the year

AND have TEX, MIN, HOU to go <0.520

AND have TOR, BOS, BAL, to go <0.550

If all 7 of those things dont happen, tigers miss the playoffs

The Tigers had 44 games left… and were 10 games back… for the WILD CARD.

They have 70 games left this season… are 5.5 games out of 1st place. They can easily win the DIVISION.

This is NOT similar.

Correct, Tigers talent wise in the field and SP can match up with the teams in the division if not be superior to them. The injuries and pen killed this team in May, killed them.

What needs to happen for tigers to get in

Tigers were 9 out of the WC and 13 from the division with 70 to go in 2024.

Not only did the tigers play lights out the rest of the way.

Seattle, Boston, KC and Minnesota all COLLAPSED going under 500 the rest of the year,

If just one of those teams one 1-2 more games in

that stretch tigers would have missed the playoffs.

But the reality is that IT DID HAPPEN…and the Tigers DID MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. I mean would you use the same disclaimer for last year?? If the Tigers don’t collapse the Tribe don’t win the division??

Yea tigers collapsed. I mean they came back to earth.

They had a ~120 game run last 60 of 24 first 60 of 25. Where they went like 0.700.

The other ~300 games the last 3 years? 0.500 or worse.

Whats more believable. The tigers are the 0.500 team 2/3 of the time. Or that 1/3 of the time at 0.700.

I’m not sure why 2024 stats are the focus here for half the American League, but the only thing I am comparing is the number of games left in 2026 to the 44 games that were left in 2024 when they made that run.

It doesn’t take any kind of miraculous run this season.

Tigers are winning % is at .576 for April, June, and July.

They are at .625 for June and July.

White Sox were hot in May (18-10 — .643)… and sub .500 for the rest of the rest of 2026.
