Fun article on Baez and KM.

5th inning for Javier Báez, Kevin McGonigle show these Tigers’ magic

==

Javy doing wind sprints

Now, let me set the scene.

It was the fifth inning. The Tigers were holding a 2-1 lead and there was one out.

McGonigle was at the plate, facing right-hander Chad Patrick. The count was 3-2, and Hinch asked Báez to take off for second.Báez, once again, had to retreat to first, trying to catch his breath.

Now remember. The bases are 90 feet apart. So it was like he was doing 30-yard wind sprints.

One after another after another.

“It’s so funny,” said Spencer Torkelson, who got to jog around the basepaths when he homered Wednesday. “I felt bad because I’ve done that before.”

Next pitch? Yep, you know the drill. Báez started running and McGonigle fouled off his third straight cutter.

And then, Báez took off, running full tilt … and McGonigle fouled off a slurve.

And it was like a comedy stuck inside an entertaining drama.

After the fifth foul ball, Báez started joking around, acknowledging the absurdity of this moment, grabbing the back of his leg, acting like he had injured his hamstring.

You couldn’t help but smile watching it.

“Like seven times or whatever the sprints were, that poor Javy had to do,” Hinch said.

The at-bat had lasted so long that McGonigle had to call timeout.

“I just called timeout because my eyes were open for so long, they were drying out,” he said.

But it was also turning into an advantage for the young hitter. “It was battle mode,” McGonigle said. “I was just focused on shrinking the zone there, trying to get my pitch.”

OK, at this point, I wondered: Would Hinch let Javy rest? Just out of mercy?

Heck no.

“He’s a pro,” Hinch said.

Finally, on the 10th pitch of the at bat, Báez took off again and McGonigle blasted a ball off the wall.

Betting that McGonigle would make contact.

Betting that Báez was smart enough to hit reverse if it was a fly ball.

Báez had to wait at second to see if it was going to be caught.

Then, he turned on the jets – OK, whatever jets he had left and gutted out the run.

“I could tell on the video, when he was coming home, he was a little exhausted from going back and forth, back and forth,” McGonigle said.

Let me pause again for an interesting tidbit: McGonigle has reached base safely in his past 20 starts – the first Tigers rookie to do so since Riley Greene reached in 20 straight in 2022.

I mean, amazing all around.

Getting his teammate an RBI

When Báez reached the dugout, his teammates gave him all kinds of love.

“He was gonna get his teammate that RBI, which says a lot about him,” Torkelson said.

Báez took a seat and leaned his head back. Completely gassed.

“I felt bad for him after that,” said right-hander Casey Mize, who started the game and was brilliant, giving up just one earned run in six-plus innings. “That was a lot of sprinting back and forth, five or six times, and then scoring from first. Pretty crazy.”

I had a free ticket to go to this game, but a damn dental appointment got in the way. I am pre-emptively whining, just in case I miss a Skubal no-no today.

Yep.

So 40m on Skubal add

And how much for Mize if if if he keeps it up? 25m

Skub is getting 32 now, so add like 16?

Mize is getting I think 9.

Flaherty’s 20m covers Skub uplift plus the small uplift in cash paid to Framber between yr 1 and 2 of his deal.

Assume Jobe and Olson and Melton are healthy.

Assume JV has a shot at returning

Assume Montero stays in the rotation mix.

I think Mize gets paid elsewhere.

Kinda same deal on offense. Torrez and his $22m pays for organic contract increases to Greene/Tork/Carp/McGonigle.

Javy’s money endingvafter 27 pays to extend Greene. Dingler’s extension gets paid for from Tork being Mize’d after 28.

Framber’s money pays to extend Clark and Jobe after 27

I am sorry for my comments in that Michigan thread. I was trying to be funny and hadn’t considered your feelings. I’m not sure if that is why you took a break but if so I sincerely apologize.

I didn’t leave because of that. But thank you anyway.
