Tigers vs Giants; May 26-28

I didn’t want to point fingers or anything but the last series where I couldn’t find a DetNews upcoming series look. I went with the Freep, which I knew was a mistake as it has to be one of the worst papers around but only had what I had at the time.

Tomorrow is a 1pm start for the slackers @stephenboyd57 @Lionpile , you failed today, do better tomorrow.

Giants at Tigers

Series: Three games at Comerica Park

First pitch: Monday – 1:10 p.m.; Tuesday – 6:40 p.m.; Wednesday – 1:10 p.m.

TV/radio: Monday-Wednesday – FanDuel Sports/97.1

Probables: Monday – RHP Hayden Birdsong (2-0, 1.91) vs. RHP Keider Montero (1-1, 5.28); Tuesday – RHP Logan Webb (5-4, 2.67) vs. RHP Jack Flaherty (2-6, 4.39); Wednesday – RHP Landen Roupp (3-3, 3.63) vs. RHP Jackson Jobe (4-1, 4.06).

Birdsong, Giants: Trey Sweeney’s teammate at Eastern Illinois in 2021 was moved into the rotation last week to replace Jordan Hicks and he pitched five scoreless innings against the Royals in his first start. He bullied the Royals mostly with a 98-mph heater. He also gets some swing-and-miss with a slider and changeup.

Montero, Tigers: The struggle for consistency remains real, evidenced by the high ERA, WHIP (1.565) and opponent OPS (.845). His strikeout rate is down (15%) and his walk rate is up (9.6%). Opponents are hitting .343 off his four-seamer and .346 off his slider with weighted on-base averages over .400 on each pitch.

One potential pen addition may be in Toledo, article in the minor league thread but here is the snippet on him, #Rolltide

Smith moves on

Dylan Smith jumped last week from Erie to Triple A Toledo and began acting with the Mud Hens as if he were still in Erie.

His first two stints for Toledo: 2.1 innings total, no hits, one walk, five strikeouts. If this stuff continues, well, a team from Detroit rather enjoys having guys with big fastballs nailing down back-end bullpen jobs.

“We really challenged him to have a good offseason and, to his credit, he worked really hard and came to spring training with a different mindset,” Garko said. “We were hopeful in spring camp the bullpen move might be for the best. Then, we sent him to Erie, and it’s been great the way he’s throwing strikes.

“He still has that starter’s repertoire: sweeper, curveball, split, and his fastball is one of the best in the organization.

“We knew it was in there.”

Smith’s heater often hits 97, can flirt with 98, and has the “vertical” teams love in a four-seamer that moves so deviously against hitters – especially when he can throw full-throttle in these shorter outings and not worry about fuel gauges.

“He didn’t pitch a lot at Alabama (only 22 innings ahead of his 2021 season with the Crimson Tide), so there was a ton of ceiling and comprehensive development,” Garko said. “We really challenged Dylan this offseason.

“He fortified his arm with strength, and with weight (Smith’s at 205 pounds versus 178 when he was drafted). He really responded.”

I was so sure we would win that series. There was literally no doubt in my mind. I was all set to buy my championship paraphernalia and everything.

Broke my heart.

It is a shame that Justin “Kenta Maeda” Verlander is on the IL right now. I would have liked to see him pitch for a couple of innings one last time in Comerica.

Not sure that was an actual strike three but it counts. We shall see how this ump calls it going forward.
