Scouting report
Williams, Guardians: This will be his second big-league start this season after coming back from an elbow injury he sustained in March. The 6-8, 250-pounder throws a 96-97 mph four-seamer with 7-3 extension. He also throws a cutter (92 mph) and a curveball. He needed 72 pitches to get through four innings against the White Sox on Wednesday.
Montero, Tigers: He posted his first big-league win at Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing 2 runs in 6.1 innings. He featured a lively four-seam fastball that sat at 95 but hit 98 and his ability to spot it in the zone helped set up his high-spin knuckle-curve (2,965 average rpm) and slider.
I thought about mentioning it, but I decided not to. A little bit because he seemed to be hotdogging it between first and second and I’m not yet convinced that a little hustle could’ve potentially gotten him to third.
His biggest contribution may have been getting their manager to overthink things by taking their starter out of the game. Everyone except Riley seemed over-matched against him.
Are we still really starting this guy Maeda tomorrow? Ugh.
