Probables:Tuesday — RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (0-0, 7.36) vs. LHP Cade Povich (1-4, 5.11); Wednesday — RHP Casey Mize (6-1, 2.91) vs. RHP Zach Eflin (5-2, 4.47); Thursday — LHP Tarik Skubal (6-2, 2.16) vs. RHP Dean Kremer (5-6, 4.98)
Gipson-Long, Tigers: His first outing in 18 months was shorter than he would’ve liked (3⅔ innings, 70 pitches), but there were some encouraging features. His four-seam fastball and slider were the swing-and-miss pitches we remembered from 2023. He got 10 whiffs on 29 swings with those two pitches. He also pounded the zone effectively.
Povich, Orioles: He’s coming off a solid start in Seattle (two runs, five strikeouts in 5⅓ innings) but he’s struggled to control right-handed hitters (.297 average, .361 on-base and .833 OPS). Off 92 mph four-seamers and sinkers, he throws a curveball, sweeper, changeup and slider. The sweeper, which he throws to both sides of the plate, has been problematic (.364 average, .667 slug). On whole, he’s been hit hard (50% hard-hit rate, 91.4 mph average exit velocity).
The O’s do some wild things. Used to be a piece of cake to hit homers to left field. So they moved the fences back 30 feet and built a tall wall. They dominated for 2 seasons cause they had a lot of good left handed hitters. Now this past offseason brought the fences back in and the pitching staff is getting hammered. Yes injuries have been an issue but never seen a team manipulate the dimensions so often and so drastically.
Evenin’ folks, so today the wife got hired to work under a James Beard award pastry chef for the next 4 1/2 months in North Carolina, and leaves on June 19th…so I’m a bit melancholy, yet also super happy and thrilled for her. Told her to go on n git, take your dream job! But damn, looks like there’s gonna be alot of solo home runs up in here until November. And I’m sooo setting up a weight bench and drum set in the garage…and maybe even grow a mullet, any pointers @stephenboyd57 ?
