Tigers vs Rockies; May 6-8

On deck: Colorado Rockies

:arrow_forward: Series: Three games at Coors Field, Denver

:arrow_forward: First pitch: Tuesday-Wednesday — 8:40 p.m.; Thursday — 3:10 p.m.

:arrow_forward: TV/radio: All three games on FanDuel Sports/97.1 FM

:arrow_forward: Probables: Tuesday — RHP Jackson Jobe (2-0, 3.38) vs. RHP Chase Dollander (2-3, 6.48); Wednesday — Casey Mize (5-1, 2.70) vs. LHP Kyle Freeland (0-4, 5.70); Thursday — LHP Tarik Skubal (3-2. 2.21) vs. RHP Antonio Senzatela (1-5. 5.50).

Scouting report

:arrow_forward: Jobe, Tigers: Expect Jobe to be sharper in his second outing after a two-week workload management layoff. He uncharacteristically walked four in four-plus innings in Houston. He also struck out four, so his stuff was far less rusty than his command. It will be interesting to see what impact the altitude in Denver has on his 2,700-rpm slider. It’s been his money pitch, with hitters just 4 for 34 against it with 10 strikeouts and a 31% whiff rate.

:arrow_forward: Dollander, Rockies: The 23-year-old is getting his big-league baptism under fire. Drafted in the first round in 2023, he’s been tagged for eight homers in 25 innings. Seven of those have come off his high-octane (97-98 mph) four-seam fastball, and only two have been in the high home altitude. Hitters are slugging .550 against him, .783 off his heater. He is coming off his best start to date, though, holding the Braves to a run and four hits over 5.2 innings.

THe biggest challenge I see for Jung is he is in that AAAA range at the “moment”. In order to hit at the MLB level he needs to see more pitches and AB’s sending him down does little to help him. His defense has been a pleasant surprise.

# How Detroit Tigers 3B Jace Jung responded to spring demotion that ‘devastated’ him
Full article at link.

===========

Looking back, Jung believes he focused too much on the swing changes and not enough on his strength: quality at-bats.

The adjustments never clicked.

The Tigers optioned Jung on March 17 to Triple-A Toledo, where he began the 2025 season.

“I was devastated,” Jung said. “When you put your expectations really high, and you don’t meet them, it’s a shot in the face because I didn’t perform like I wanted to.”

==========
Entering spring training, the Tigers were confident in Jung’s bat but had questions about his ability to handle third base, particularly his footwork. He quickly put those defensive concerns to rest with solid play at the hot corner, using polished footwork to position himself for success on grounders. By the end of camp, however, the questions had flipped — his defense held up better than expected, but doubts emerged about his ability to hit at the MLB level.

So far, Jung hasn’t provided an answer.

Through 46 MLB games, Jung is hitting .202 with 22 walks and 39 strikeouts. In 2025, he owns a .100 batting average with seven walks and 10 strikeouts over 12 games. Although Jung continues to draw walks and make smart swing decisions, he whiffs on fastballs at an alarming rate and isn’t producing enough hard contact.

But there’s no denying the quality of his at-bats.

The MLB average is 3.9 pitches per plate appearance across the past three seasons.

Jung averages 4.08 in his MLB career.

“It’s getting back to that mindset — go up there and have quality at-bats,” Jung said in late March, the early days of his 19-game stint in Triple-A Toledo, where he averaged 4.52 pitches per plate appearance and showcased a .409 on-base percentage. “I’ll try to stack those quality at-bats throughout the season, and I think I’ll be pretty good.”

Hey @HSVLion you know we have nuts on the roster but did you know there is a “roll tide” player on the roster?
Kid has an interesting story, may be as smart as Patricia…

These back stories are always fun, and so much respect for what these guys go through chasing their dream. Very different from the NFL and NBA drafts.

“All the new faces kind of get to do an introduction,” Lee said. “Like, ‘oh, hey, my name’s Chase.’”

There were about 100 people in the room – all the players invited to spring training, coaches and support staff – and they went through all the basics.

His name: Chase Lee. From Alabama. Sixth-round draft pick by the Texas Rangers

“What did you study?” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch asked.

“Aerospace engineering,” Lee responded.

Yes, at the moment, he had his new teammates attention. There aren’t a lot of aerospace engineers running around professional clubhouses.

“Hey, have you ever started a game?" Hinch asked. “In the minor leagues?”

"Before I played at Alabama, I played on the club team,” Lee said.

He had tried to walk on at Alabama team – only after his mother urged him to do it – and he was cut.

“So I went and played club baseball, which is like intramural, maybe, a step above it,” Lee said. “I tried out again the next year, and I made the team and (Hinch) was like, ‘I had no idea.’”

==========

The low point came in 2023 when he was pitching at Triple-A Reno and he was struggling with pain in both his hips. “I wasn’t performing and I was in a lot of pain,” he said. “I was living in an apartment. My wife was pregnant and we had a roommate.”

Lee decided it might be the end. “I’m ready to go home,” he said. “This just isn’t for me anymore.”

But his wife, Claire, refused to let him hang up his cleats. “She’s like, ‘no, actually, you’re gonna keep doing it,’” he said. “And we’re gonna go buy a camper on Monday so that we can have our own space.”

They bought an RV and continue to live in one: “Happy wife,” he said. “Happy life.”

So this is from the Skubal praises Lee article above but worthy of a separate post, imo, as it gives a look at how Hinch works, in this case with pitchers. Hinch’s mindset and how he determines what they can and can’t handle.

But there is something else. It kind of blew me away when Hinch put in Lee in a tight game, in a high-leverage moment, in a Skubal start.

I mean, no pressure kid: Just don’t blow it for the ace of the staff.

But that offers a glimpse into how Hinch manages.

More: Detroit Tigers designate Kenta Maeda for assignment, bring up Tyler Owens

“First off, I believe before I see it,” Hinch said. “These guys are up here for a reason.”

Lee’s role: to get right-handed hitters out. And that’s what he did.

But Hinch studies these rookies on a much deeper level than how they perform on the field. “How does he respond?” Hinch asked. “More importantly, how does he go about it and what are his reactions?”

Hinch said he learns more about a player after a game than from what happens in the contest.

More: Riley Greene reacted with nonchalance after making MLB history with two homers in ninth

“How fast is his mind working?” Hinch said. “What did he feel? What did he see? What’s the feedback he’s giving (pitching coach Chris Fetter)? Those are all little pieces of information that help make future decisions based on how in control of the situation that you’re in.

I haven’t played DFS baseball all year but I’m sure as hell stacking that Tigers lineup tonight with Aaron judge Otani and the bunch of Scrubs

I actually feel bad for Rockies fans… No good free agent pitcher is ever going to sign there. Any good pitchers you develop are going to want to leave asap. Then you get to play in a division with the Dodgers, San Fran, San Diego and the Diamondbacks. A good season is trying to win 65 games. Lol brutal existence that must be for a fan.

Tigers hit 5 or more in this series?

I got MLB the Show and rebuilt the Rockies in less than two years. All it takes is the willingness to do…something.

We went 63-99 in 2025 but I’m currently playing the NLDS against the Dodgers. We’re down 2-1 in the series but we’ve still got a chance!

Have you considered being the Rockies GM? Lol I’m sure they would be very impressed with your video game skills

They just need to trade for Mookie Betts, Luis Arraez, Aaron Judge, Yordan Alvarez, Rafael Devers, Tarik Skubal, Logan Webb, and Emmanuel Clase like I did! Then they’ll be pretty good.

I created 15 guys, all named Bols, and never won a game by less than 20.

Riley and Tork alone will have at least five of them.

Coors is one of the biggest ballparks in MLB and also one of the most HR friendly. I love it when we go there.

My issue is they will go off one game and stink it up the next game.

I see this as a big series for Tork
