Tigers @ Yankees: June 29-July 1

Should have kept Jones in the game. Hinch sucks.

Glad Carp is in. Not sure I have ever seen a Manager pinch hit in the 2nd inning of a game for a non injured player

Dingler is so damn good.

7 run lead… and the BLOWPEN trying to make it a game. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

The spreadsheets didn’t forecast that 3 run dinger!!!

Good thing it wasn’t a close game.

Why do so many people want to trade Mize at the deadline?
If you compare Mize and Skubal, who will bring the biggest return at the deadline?
I could see trading one but not both.

Because they’re both impending FAs.

sure, i know that, but we can’t sign one of them?

Tigers aren’t winning and both are probably gone next year. I could see mize staying but as of now Skubal is gone

I posted this in another thread but we need to try to get an extension done with him immediately. If they can’t come to terms then we need to trade him. Like Skubal he would bring back some nice value and we don’t want to lose him for nothing.

right.
Although a couple more starts like that by Mize and Skubal, I could see Mize (almost) approaching Skubal territory for a re-signing. Do either of them love the D?

Why would my sign an extension now when he’s in his platform year, two and a half seasons healthy and has put up one and a half seasons of progressively solid and now excellent results?

This is kind of like his dream after being a college guy so not starting young like a Skenes or a Miz, knowing that he’s going to hit free agency in his late twenties and then having at least a third of his six seasons delayed from injury and to be honest some of it ineffective before and right after that. Now dude is dealing and he’s going to want to get paid paid paid.

I mean it’s not like he’s going to get number one starter money cuz he’s not that and he’s not going to become that at least how they’re defined nowadays. But as long as he stays healthy and relatively effective he’s gone from the type of contract that would be reasonable around 5 years 20 or 22 million a year to maybe pushing that to a guaranteed 6th year at 25 per year. And I think that’s probably a mid case now it could go higher depending what’s out there in free agency after Skub gets snapped up.

If you’re the Tigers do you want to pay up for him after seeing what happens with good but not great stuff starters in their mid to late twenties after an injury history with Flaherty? Or do you want to take a look at what you have coming up with Montero and Melton and Jobe and also realize you can see if you can rehab Reese Olson into the next Mize.

They are starting to have some other guys come through the system and signal that they may be ready by 2028/29 as well.

They can payroll neutral pay Skub up to $40m/yr with Mize’s $6m and Verlander’s $2m that wasn’t deferred, and scratch around for the other likely $5m a year AAV.

Still have $22m coming off from Gleyber (as Flaherty’s $20m expiring matxhes the jump from yr 1 to yr 2 for Framber’s deal) to pay for arbitration increases to Greene, Tork, Vest Carpenter, Vierling, McKinstry. Jansen will add a few million back as I’m sure he won’t have his team option picked up.

TL;DR, thry are gonna reload next year, and have to choose between

1-Bring back Skub and replace 2 staff slots and 2b from within, maybe w/o the cash to add a bopper for RF/3B/2B

2- Bring back Mize instead of Skub amd add that bopper.

3-Resign neither, go young and cheap on SP2-5 and add two hitters.

Clark starts in CF next year regardless.

After 27, they can reroute Baez’s $ to Greene, see if internally they are ready to replace Tork with Briceño, add Rainer, and work on an extension for Dingler.
