On the “starters” side of the field, outside of the offensive line, we saw the depth play out as expected. Amongst the notable battles, Daurice Fountain saw time with the starting group over Antoine Green, while Donovan Peoples-Jones was repping even later with the top unit. At tight end and running back, Shane Zylstra was clearly ahead of James Mitchell, while Craig Reynolds remains ahead of Sione Vaki, both of which are important things to note for the reserve spots.
On defense, the Lions cycled through their Base and Nickel looks, with the only clear alteration being that Branch and Kerby Joseph were the starters, while Ifeatu Melifonwu was with the second group.
So who the heck is this Fountain guy? @Thats2 I know you’re a draft nerd what’s the scoop on this Fountain dude? Is he skilled? Fast? Or is this Patrick Edwards and David Kirkus 2.0?
And I thought he was a young guy… he’s 28 with 3 career catches… has barely played. Hmmmm
Ask @1CasanovaJack, he’s been watching him since his college days. He flashed during the pre-draft process, and I remember him having a good pre-season with the Colts a few years back, but that’s about as far as my knowledge about him goes.
Feels like he is the replacement for Quintus Cephus. Red Zone threat. throw it up to him on 4th and long like the bears did…
Since Goff doesn’t generally like to throw those 50/50 balls unless the situation calls for it, I fully expect the Rams and Matt Stafford to pick him up on the waiver wire…
I’ve mentioned him before, was actually surprised that he got drafted where he did because Northern Iowa didn’t have a great QB throwing to him. He has the skills, at this point I assume his route running has improved and he may actually stick. Last season DJ Chark played in 15 games but posted fairly pedestrian numbers. Well, sometimes it isn’t about the guy catching the ball, it’s about who was throwing him the ball. This year by all accounts Chark is killing it with the Chatgers. Fountain was a Chief briefly and he did have a great QB throwing but it was also a deep WR room. Good luck to him and to us, we need depth at WR.
I am not buying the Fountain hype unless he kills the preseason. He struggled Monday when the pads came on. At 28 yo he has done nothing in the NFL. These old camp warriors show their true self when they get in the game.
If he was 25 in his 3rd camp I would get excited we might have something. But this NFL camp 7 for him.
