Tyrell Crosby throwing cold water on the Lions' current regime

All of this. 100%.

The entire concept is stupid and doesn’t even deserve to be taken seriously. OTAs are only a few days at a time. Crosby might not be a turd but he was acting like one.

And yet there’s still quite a few making it sound like Cosby is being dramatic. The nfl billion dollar machine rumbled on , could lions have avoided this with a injury settlement ?

Agreed.

I also found an article that has some details about the timeline.

7/31/21 — Lions training camp starts (not injured)
8/5/21 — Crosby has hamstring pull
between 8/6 to 8/10/21 — Crosby has back pain
8/11/21 — Crosby returns to limited practicing. He was apparently fined $5000 for missing his weight workout, which he is currently saying was due to getting treatment on his back.
He also states now that he was having unrelenting back spasms after his return to practice.
8/22 - 8/26/21 Crosby again mentions back pain, and states a trainer asked him if he could play a few snaps against Colts. Crosby agreed to play.

8/27/21 — Crosby plays 9 snaps against Colts (apparently not in to much pain during warmups)
8/30/21 — Lions inform Crosby he will be released with an injury designation
9/3/21 — Crosby clears waivers (i.e. no other team valued him enough to to make a claim even though he was only listed as a grade 1 hamstring strain previously). According to Crosby himself, the Lions didn’t make a big deal about his back spasms/pain, so interesting that 31 other teams didn’t want him for a reasonable 5th round rookie salary.
9/4/21 to 9/9/21 — Within 5 days of clearing waivers, Lions offered Crosby an injury settlement that would pay him 4 weeks of his salary. He turned it down. This is a telling decision on both sides. This indicates the Lions team physicians thought he should be able to pass a physical within 4 weeks. As for Crosby… he either didn’t believe he could pass a physical in 4 weeks… or didn’t have confidence in being signed by another team to play… or he just wanted to get paid all season to NOT play.

September to December
Crosby saw several physicians about his back.
He apparently had a spinal cortisone injection that involved a complication (CSF leak causing bad headaches)
He saw a “spine specialist” that determined “discs” (article has it as plural form) had degenerated significantly, which then required surgery

12/15/21 — Crosby had spinal fusion procedure.

.
.

So my take on this… is that if Crosby was having back pain during the warmups before the Colts game… he could have sat the game out. He could have stayed on the turf during any practice and said he back pain… which would have got the media’s attention and questions would have been raised to Campbell at his press conferences. He could have raised more of an objection without actually saying the words.

The entire time he was saying he had back pain (before his release) was no more than 24 days… and only 17 days from his return to practice until the Colts game. :face_with_monocle::face_with_monocle::face_with_monocle:

info on injury settlements….

they offered him an injury settlement (4 weeks pay)…
and Crosby turned it down.

After not reaching the settlement, he reverted back to IR for the season.

My post above this has more detail on it.

Or he thought he was more injured than what the Lions believed or were telling him . . . and this seems to be true if he had some type of spinal fusion surgery.

Nice breakdown of the timeline. :+1: :+1:

Dan won’t let this fester and will open his Monday press briefing with some response to Crosby’s assertions.

Yep - I’ve been told for a decade my spine has “severe degenerative arthritis” in all the Ls… I need my right knee replaced and surgery on my ankle tendons …. Over a decade of doctors telling me this with MRIs etc….

Haven’t done any of it and I still, with great humility and caution, I still life and run/jog all while training for and completing a full or half marathon annually since 2011….

I trust them, but not exclusively….

Doctors can be wrong…. Like for a decade straight imho

One needs discernment…… without ego…. Or fear

Indeed. Plus if it was a chronic degenerative issue, it wasn’t a misdiagnosis - it just wasn’t diagnosed yet. The Lions probably don’t have the expertise in house to suss that out.

The timeline tells me within three-ish weeks he goes from complaining about back pain to seeing a back specialist who makes the diagnosis. In the ‘real world’ that’s at the speed of light. Especially in the covid era. Try calling a back specialist right now and see how long the wait is

And where’s the accountability on himself for not staying in shape? His back sure wasn’t helped by his lack of physical dedication.

I mean, I’m a fat slob but I get paid to write beer recipes and I actually develop my skill set and marketability by drinking beer (burp) If I were paid millions to be an athlete, Id be more like Cooper Kupp and live and breathe training to prolong my career and improve my skill set and marketability. I sure wouldn’t miss a few days of OTAs with a new regime, nearing the end of a rookie contract for a job that pays me millions and potentially millions more

To be clear, bc sometimes I’m not, Crosby 100% could be correct that he was hurt and he was needing further attention and he was misdiagnosed by a medical team that was not up to snuff and later their mistakes cost them their jobs once the FO realized what they inherited from BQ and MP. But his attitude and behavior leading up to getting cut help with the impression that he was being dramatic.

So, if I’m understanding things correctly, the Lions paid a substantial part of Crosby’s 2021 salary for 17 games at a somewhat reduced rate because he was on IR for the full year. Crosby rejected the 4 game settlement because he correctly thought no team would pick him up because of his back injury. Also his rookie contract ended after the 2021 season.

All of this. It’s so much easier to be healthy when you got money unfortunately. And everything else should said spot on.

That’s my take as of now too! Maybe more info comes out yet, but the majority of players seem to love playing for DC and AG, one dude is an outlier.

It took me about a year until I finally got spinal fusion surgery after I got my MRI. They usually have you do every alternative treatment first. As the surgeon told me, it’s the process you have to go through because of your insurance company.

That right there tells me all I need to know.

The Head Coach and General Manager of the Detroit Lions called him into the office for a meeting to discuss his attitude. Perhaps he would have preferred a public chiding like Patricia was prone to do? Maybe he would have preferred being released without any explanation, warning or attempt to salvage his opportunity?

Good stuff bro. When you break it down that succinctly and then add the No-show to OTA’s due to being homesick you really get a good assessment of the situation. Fair or not to Crosby. To me it’s like getting a new boss and literally everything possibly going wrong as you make your first impression.

I don’t blame Campbell for bringing Crosby into the office for not showing up at ota’s. I get it’s voluntary but at the same time you’re a fringe roster guy playing for new coaches and front office people. Even if you’re homesick it’s only another few days. If that were me I’d be doing everything I can to make a good impression.

It also depends on what the issue is as to the time frame. My issue wasn’t a big deal at first but my specialist told me it would deteriorate in stages. I’d be ok, then it would get worse. It would be ok for a bit and then get worse again. And so on….

He also looked quite overweight in those 9 snaps he played against the Colts. Poor conditioning is a huge risk factor for hamstring and back injuries. I wonder what his weight was last year… because looked to be carrying a lot more in the gut than he did in 2019.
