UDFA Thread

Bravo. It all makes sense now. It takes a village, and it is you who served as Brett Whitefield’s Deep Throat. More proof that The Den is the Ur source of everything relevant to the Lions.

Ideas for future topics, no it’s not too soon.

They always doubted: How Erick Hunter became the Michael Jordan of the NFL.

Should have been obvious: Anthony Lucas and Keldric Faulk switch slots in the 2029 redraft.

Teammates call Aidan Keanaaiha Ground Zero because Negative Nancy was already taken.

Late branding: Why Tony Romo is now called Luke Altmyer Lite.

Kitselman has Miles to go but he’s already there.

Going forward the league will probably have to limit Brad’s access to UDFAs after the success of this year’s class.

Yes, they need to go back to 12 rounds so that someone can discover the next Karl Mecklenberg.

Or Anthony Carter, who went 24 picks after Mecklenburg. That draft was actually pretty loaded with guys who wouldn’t have been drafted today. Also Tim Krumrie and Jesse Sapolu.

I agree with everything he said. If there is one thing that stands out it is his talk about the TEs in the running game. I have no idea who Whitefield is but that was a great listen and thank you for posting it. The regular slappys in here think Brock Wright is a fine #2 TE but the dude can’t block.I watch him miss blocks every week and his PFF blocking scores are some of the worst in the NFL the last few years. Nobody will listen but this guy gets it.

PFF has been saying that for years and the standard remark around here is that PFF doesn’t have qualified people doing the grading.

He is a fantasy guy first but also has a big presence in the draft space. He’s also a big Lions fan. I will say that I think the highest score he’s ever given to a prospect, and his #1 QB with a bullet back in 2024, was to JJ McCarthy. He planted his flag hard on that one. I’m not ready to call McCarthy a bust yet, but I don’t know anyone who would want him over Maye, Jayden Daniels, Caleb or even Nix now (maybe Penix I guess). And I certainly won’t fault any analyst for one big miss, but man he was very assertive with his take that year.

Wasn’t AC USFL related?

Well I felt that way about Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning. I also thought Kyle Boller and Jeff George were can’t miss prospects. Other than Maye I wasn’t crazy about JJ or any of those other QBs. I figured Caleb would have some success but I did not want to root for that guy as my QB.

I just like our draft when you add on the UDFAs that we got. To me it seems like the Whitefield guy has watched some Lions football the last few years.

Could be, yeah. I know he played there so makes sense.

Oh he for sure has. Like I said, he’s a diehard. He works for a national company so you don’t see too much homerism out of him these days, but he doesn’t hide from it either. And early in his career he was all Lions all the time.

We for sure have all had our share of misses (I thought Josh Allen was doomed to bust), he was just so out there that draft cycle as the “JJ McCarthy guy” (along with Thor Nystrom I believe), that it’s very memorable. He staked his claim nationally very loudly. Again, you’re not always gonna be right, but I didn’t agree with a lot of his pro-McCarthy points either. That said I also don’t think his career is doomed like so many others seem to.

Man he makes a great point about the way Wonnum was used last year, basically to set picks. Of course his numbers sucked! It’s good to hear that from someone who’s actually scouted other teams.

My player evaluations usually start with their visual athletic abilities in small sample sizes and end with YouTube interviews and statistics culled from PFF, OTC and the like. Yet I love listening to those who dig much deeper with nuanced eyes, like Brett Whitefield. I mean, I’m simply not going to watch 2 hours of Miles Kitselman blocking. Brett’s enthusiasm and vision for Jimmy Rolder got me feeling some sort of way, and this is coming from someone who had Rolder at #118 in late March. Then I decided we didn’t have a need.

I love abstract paintings, and understanding and appreciating are separate things.

I like it and am a better person for having seen whatever that is.
