Aaaaaand that’s a huge difference and a big catalyst as to why the Vikings are winning. They’re playing well and are winning… The Lions aren’t playing great (offensively) and are still winning while losing the TO battle. The same doesn’t apply to the Lions bc they’re NOT protecting the football as well as they usually do… They need to get better in that department.
The Lions have proven it over time… There was a lot of turnover in Minnesota this off-season… New journeyman (career backup) QB, new RB, new defensive line… The consensus was they downgraded at a lot of positions. I’ll take the wait and see approach with them, they don’t have the track record to buy in, I think it’s fools gold and they won’t be able to maintain. The Lions have maintained their level of play, and have improved, for several season now… Apples and oranges
The Lions have proven it for several seasons?? Proven what?? They just won a division title for the first time in 30 YEARS last year. They just won two playoffs games and hadn’t won in the playoffs in 32 years prior. So again, proven what for several years?? Dan Campbell is 26-27-1 has HC….so gain proven what for several years?? What the Lions have done is established a culture and has made steady improvement since Campbell and Holmes took over….that is for sure. But to say for several years is just overstating it a bit. That said, roster turnover that the Vikings have endured is not the first time that a team has had such a turnover and won games and made the playoffs. Journeyman QBs going to teams and leading them to and thru the playoffs is nothing unheard of. Kevin O’Connell is a bright offensive mind and a very good coach, near elite level. I have mentioned many times recently how good he is with QBs, which is why I said JJ McCarthy landed is a good spot. But to harken back to you saying that the Vikings could finish the season 1-6….my answer again to that is so could the Lions. The only apples to oranges in this discussion is that the Lions were pre-season favorites to contend for a Super Bowl and the Vikings were not
Yes, several seasons… They started 1-6, finished 9-8, they didn’t give up, played hard even through the early struggles. Through that, they’ve proved, over several years, that that’s the kind of team they are. The Vikings haven’t proven that yet, they’ve played 3 games with big changes at big positions.
A journeyman QB playing well for extended periods of time IS unheard of… That’s why they’re journeymen if Darnold can pull the rare “Baker Mayfield” and play well for a full season, he’ll get a good deal in the off-season. I remember when this Vikings team had Josh Dobbs winning games with a QBR over 100 and a 2-1 INT:TD ratio… Then he pooped his pants and threw 4 INTs. Point is, the Lions have proven over several seasons that they’re resilient, not losing back to back games since October 2022 (that’s 2 seasons) proves my point. Vikings need to prove they can keep this pace up, the Lions have already.
Their HC had already proven that he can….so there is that! And he’s done it with different QBs, that is, gotten big wins! Again roster turnover is par for the course…and the Vikings are proving that they can win with the guys they have
I knew the Vikings would have a good offense. If JJ stayed healthy he would probably be the best looking rookie QB right now. What has shocked me is the Vikings defense. That Houston win was a big one. Gotta give them credit.
For what it’s worth Darnold has started a season 3-0 before with Carolina and then fell apart, but there’s really no reason to think he can’t stay successful this year.
