There’s a deep, deep history here and, frankly, I want revenge.
For those unaware, Washington has kicked Detroit’s ass in in the post-season in …
1983, 1991, and 2000.
That 1991 season and NFC championship game loss was particularly brutal, because it was the last time we had a first round bye, and we had just blasted Dallas (the hottest team in the league) 38-6 in the divisional.
Redskins beat us 41-10 in a game that wasn’t as close as that score indicates. Then they went onto win the Super Bowl.
This rivalry doesn’t get the attention it should because we don’t play them enough, but it should.
Thank you for posting this was going to make a thread on it myself.
Playoff losses the last 40+ years
SF twice - We beat them this year
Sea- We beat them this year
Dal- We beat them this year Wash 3 times- Philly-
GB twice - We beat them twice this year
TB - We knocked them out last year
If our Revenge season continues… very likely it could be WASH round 2 division round PHILLY round 3 NFCCG
OHHH And get this last two times we opened with 2 straight home game
2024 we played RAMS and TB - Week 1 & 2 at home - Knocked them out of playoffs last year
2022 we played WASH and PHILLY - Week 1 & 2 at home -
Lots of painful memories against them….the Darrell Green INT to win the game for them, along with RFK literally shaking and so loud Chuck Long could not operate near the Goal Line. Could go on and un. Ugh
I remember both beatings (1991 and 2000). The thing I most remember was that the field was an absolute abomination. Looked like it had 5 straight football games played there after getting 4 inches of rain.
We definitely owe them a drubbing.
I was thinking how rarely we have beat them, including the 3 playoff losses, so i looked it up. In 47 games we are 16- 31 agaist Washington.
I’d love to see us eliminate them for a string of years in a row, starting next week.
I remember the day the “run n shoot” died. It was at this game, which I attended.
Lions appeared to be on the verge of finally beating the Redskins. They were up 35-14 in the 3rd quarter and 38-21 at the start of the 4th quarter. Redskins scored 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter and then kicked a FG in OT to win 41-38.
I was about the same. Graduated UM in '89, got season tickets starting in ‘90 after seeing Sanders’ rookie year. Moved to Charleston in '91, right around Halloween and before the Rams game (Thumbs Up Mike!). Drove back for the Dallas game, well worth 28 hours in the car.
And then watched in despair from a bar in Charleston while the Redskins dismantled the Lions.
But even then we thought we were at the start of something.
