"We're Good" at TE?

This shit’s fun. Y’all should use it.

Looks like Gadsden got a lot of the stuff that Conklin did in New York. Which is unsurprising to me since I loved OG as a joker.

Harbaugh definitely uses his fair share of multiple TE formations, but the Chargers have thrown less than 20% of their passing targets to the TEs since Harbaugh took the job.

The Chargers TE targets were actually higher in the 3 years prior to Harbs taking the job.

If Sam is fine then our TE room is sound. It really is that simple.

That’s heresy. The Erick Hunter Fan Club will not allow such nonsense.

Right, strange as in unexpected. I have maintained that I thought/hoped there might be an explanation for it, there often is (an opinion further emboldened by our decision to sign him). The strange part is that it’s unusual to see a guy go from being so useful to being a healthy scratch, almost regardless of how he’s being used.

I’ll agree with that part.

If…if Conkin does return to form…and Miles Kitselman proves himself in the run game…Brock Wright could be the odd man out. I don’t expect that, yet he better bring it in training camp. The Lion could pay the other 2 and still save $1M on the salary cap by cutting Wright after June.

Just for fun I looked up the Cardinals TE stats (for TEs other than McBride) last season as Petzing also loves TEs and is our OC.

The Cardinals TE2 was Elijah Higgins and he had 30 catches for 301 yards.

The Cardinals TE3 was Josiah Deguara who had 3 catches for 21 yards and 1 TD.

For reference Brock Wright had 14 catches for 108 yards and 2 TDs are the clear cut TE2 here in Detroit (and that was with LaPorta missing several games).

I think we’re fine at TE.

Tip Reiman is the Cardinals TE2 but was hurt last year and only played in 4 games. He is a big blocking TE and one of the best in the NFL. Of course we are only measuring TEs by how many points they add to a fantasy football team so he has no value.

Believe it or not there are teams that value TEs for their ability to block. Based on his performance last year and what the Lions signed him for I would say that he was close to being out of the league. He signed for 1 year at 1.3 mil and the vet salary cap benefit 1.075 mil. That tells me there was no bidding war for his services. I’m glad we signed him to a 1 year prove it deal and I hope he turns it around. He was so cheap he does not even factor into the compensatory pick formula so I’m all for it.

Seems like high praise for a guy that has played ~ 550 career snaps.

Also… I don’t have access to all PFF scores, but Reiman didn’t exactly post top numbers for a guy that is “one of the best” in the NFL. His run blocking grade was 60.5 in 2024 when he played ~ 40% of their snaps.

He certainly could still be improving, but I think that was a little oversold.

Role & Impact: As a 2024 third-round pick, Reiman established himself as the #2 tight end behind Trey McBride due to his “devastating” run-blocking ability.

I don’t have access to PFF but that grade was based on his rookie year. I would expect the grades to be much higher for the 2nd half of his rookie season. I’m sure Jim Harbaugh would love him.

yeah well when thinking about our luck with injuries, I’m not opposed to having more depth.

Wanted to chime in on the Harbaugh loves TEs exchange. In an interview Harbaugh said that FB and TE was the first things Bo’s asked him about his offensive approach…I would lean towards Harbaugh loving TEs because his coaching style is patterned after his mentor…BO!

Yeah it felt like a lot of them got overdrafted. To be fair I liked Delp and was hoping he’d last to the 4th, but I didn’t think it was gonna happen which it didn’t

I have an overall grade on a guy so I can compare them across draft class, and yeah by my grades a big swathe went earlier than the grade I had for them should have indicated, even in a class like this one. More of them also went early than all but 2 classes this century, so it was an overall statistical outlier too. I don’t know that we were planning on drafting one, but that wasn’t what I meant to say. I meant ‘given the above facts (and the 2nd part IS a fact) I’m glad we didn’t take one.’

Wait now I’m labeling him a superstar? I don’t think I’ve ever said he was more than a really good TE3 or maybe a 2B. I just feel we have a complete TE room…that’s all.

This is who he is. This is what the NFL says when you see what the Lions paid him.

He’s the Larry Borom of the group. Of course you don’t want him to be an every down starter, but he’s more than a capable backup. With a proven track record of filling in nicely when called upon.
