I see what you guys are saying, but it’s not as cut and dry as that.
Essentially what you are saying is that if New England traded a 6th round player (Tom Brady) for a 5th round pick later, that they came out ahead?
Now, don’t get me wrong. We all know Diggs isn’t Brady, but my point is, you cannot take a player for where they were drafted and say you got a good deal by trading him later for a higher pick. You have to take the player for what he is at the time of the trade. Diggs is a better than late 5th round player NOW. Therefore, trading him for a low 5th rounder was terrible value. Especially when we threw in a 7th rounder to boot. Just look at all of the 5th round picks the Lions have taken over the last several years. Not a single one of them are even close to as good as Diggs. Quinn got bent over here.
I agree that this year he’s not playing as well. But he has had a hamstring injury too. Slay also has a hamstring injury and isn’t playing as well KJ has been banged up and not playing as well. We can’t trade away everyone who struggling through injuries. Diggs has been a fairly solid player for most of his career.
In my opinion the only player who’s playing better than last year is Stafford. He’s pretty much carrying the team right now.
I get what you are saying BigTenPhan, but has he really played better then a 5th round pick? He has been missing tackles alot more then usual this season. He has never been that great in coverage due to his size and generally having to take on tall TEs has not helped matters. Now if you would have ask me last year when the Lions extended him, then I would agree, but since his extension his play has regressed. This leads me to think that while he is a good play, he is not a fit for the Lions’ defense. So regressed play, bad fit and (if I heard correctly on the radio) doesn’t really get the money until next season from his extension which is now on the Seahawks. I do not see it as a bad situation.
Diggs isn’t necessarily playing well, but I go back to a point that I believe they considered. Even when healthy Diggs is limited in what he can do. If you believe in the guys who have at the position now and intend to move on from Diggs, it makes sense to get something in return for him. I’m certainly hoping there is a corresponding roster move we are about to see.
Figured you would punt. Just saying your argument is severely flawed. Trading a player for a pick is a 1:1 comparison. It makes zero difference where that player was drafted years prior. Your argument is like saying it would be a terrific savvy move for Quinn to trade Kenny Golladay to the Jets for their 3rd round pick next year, because it will be a higher pick than we used on him.
You take the player at their current value. Diggs is a higher value than the 175th overall pick in next year’s draft. Plain and simple. Seattle got a steal here.
Yes, he has always played better than any 5th round pick we have made in the entire Quinn era. All of our 5th round picks flat out suck or haven’t even played. Thinking we can flip a legit starter into something better when we have never done that before is crazy talk. 5th round picks made by Detroit is like throwing a pick in the garbage.
Diggs is coming off an injury. His best games are yet to come this season. Seattle is getting him at the right time and gave up next to nothing for him.
I also think every single player in this system looks like a bad fit. Quinn went and got Snacks and Flowers to fit in Patricia’s system, and both have been virtually invisible all year. If players that fit the system do next to nothing, then I have a problem with the system.
The argument isn’t flawed. The comparison is flawed and goes down an irrelevant rabbit hole that I’m not willing to chase you down.
IF YOU HAVE DECIDED TO MOVE ON FROM A PLAYER, and you can get use out of that player and flip them for a pick at or above the round in which you took them…that’s a win.
Agreed - and while I hate to lose team players and great locker room guys in reality this move is probably better for QD. He will fit better in the Seattle defense which can make his career longer and more fulfilling. I loved QD and hate to lose him but this could be a positive for everyone in the long term. Short term is feels like a kick in the guy.
You keep saying that, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. The team is not better. The team will not be better flipping Diggs for nothing. If we were in salary cap hell and needed immediate space, that’s one thing. This is simply trading a commodity for a low level pick that you could only dream would turn out to be someone as good as Diggs.
Also, you calling this a win is basically saying Seattle overpaid. Sorry, I’ll trust their front office over the circus we have here.
Maybe it’s the price of that long term contract that made him (a) expensive and so expendable with the rise of Harris and (b) unattractive to other teams based on how they perceived his worth and that contract.
Do you think the Lions didn’t try to get more for Diggs? They clearly don’t want to pony up the $12m or whatever it is over the next two years. The market has spoken and it is what it is.
I think we overrate Diggs BC he was lights out the first half dozen or so games after switching to safety. Take out that stretch and he’s mostly just been a guy. Simply a complimentary piece. Harris has a much higher upside.
So what? That was before they got Harris, and now are out of that contract with at least the pick they spent on drafting him. And maybe they’ve looked at the safeties coming out next year and see a good crop to choose another from on the cheap.
The whole who extended him argument is silly. BQ got started level play out of that safety spot for not a ton of money. That bought him time to go find a superior replacement in the draft (in his opinion.). Let’s see how it plays out.
Slay and Snacks can say what they want on Twitter, but it’s moves like this that allow the team to sign them to extensions without going into cap hell. I’m sure they realize it… but that’s not going to stop them from protesting the move a bit to support their bud.
