In 2025, Keith hit .256 with 13 home runs, 48 walks and 102 strikeouts across 137 games — the second year of his MLB career. The 24-year-old improved at the plate in OPS (.689 to .746), walk rate (6.5% to 10.3%) and exit velocity (87.8 mph to 90 mph).

On defense, Keith played 254⅓ innings with 32 starts at third base, 184⅔ innings with 21 starts at second base and 144 innings with 17 starts at first base.

He didn’t play third base until June.

“He got throw into the fire and was able to really play the position, which is something that I find really impressive,” Harris said. “We’re going to try not to do that to him again. That was more based on need, but the fact that he can play all three positions gives us a real advantage.”

…That won’t change.

The Tigers expect Keith to play all three positions during the 2026 season, creating flexibility for their roster construction and roster usage.

“We feel that he needs to play all three,” president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Monday, Oct. 13, during the end-of-season press conference at Comerica Park. “The opportunity to continue to get more work at all three is really important for us.”

There is one area that needs to improve this offseason.

“We need our strength and conditioning group to get the first step faster,” Hinch said.Third base appears to be his best position.
“The ability to add an impact, left-handed bat like that at a number of different positions gives us a number of different avenues to build this team,” Harris said.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Tigers have Torkelson locked in at first base and Keith as an option at first, second and third, but everything else is undefined.

One possible alignment: Torkelson at first base, Keith at second base, top prospect Kevin McGonigle at shortstop, free agent Alex Bregman at third base.

There are many other combinations.

“We’re starting to break through with his comfort level with these positions, and based on how our winter goes, we’ll adapt accordingly,” Hinch said, “but at no point do I think this winter he’s going to be able to say one position. For the best use of our roster and our team, I think he’s a viable option at multiple positions.”

I really like Keith and appreciate his flexibility, which will keep him busy next season. He may just end up being the Don Kelly of the current team?

However, the Tigers are quickly approaching a log jam at 2nd base because I don’t think McGonigal’s future is at SS, but rather at 2nd, and they’ll want him in the lineup every day. Keith’s bat, particularly from a power standpoint, will need to continue to improve if he’s going to be an every day 3B. I still don’t see an every day SS anywhere in our system.

Also, I really don’t think Bregman is the answer at 3B for the kind of money and length of contract he wants. I think his next contract will put whichever team he signs with in a Javy Baez situation. Bregman is already showing signs of significant decline in performance now. He started last season with a crazy hot April, hitting .350 with 7 hr 11 doubles 24 rbi and a 1.089 OPS. This had Tiger fans freaking out that Harris didn’t throw a trough of money at him. The rest of the season saw him produce only 11 hrs 17 doubles and 38 rbi. That is Colt Kieth level production at $35M+ per year additional cash.

Jordan Yost is the youngest… but perhaps the best chance to stick at SS?

Did we forget about Rainer at SS? You know, one of the highest ranked short stops in the minors?

Shoulder surgery and SS just seem like a bad combination. I hope the kid recovers at full throwing strength, but that injury more than likely puts him in line for the logjam at 2nd base I mentioned in my original post, which is really unfortunate.

Rainer is the ss in the system to watch and is in the top 50 or 100 prospect lists on most MILB rankings

early post surgery reports say the opposite, yet, won’t know til he is back in the field. Keith had similar surgery which is why they moved him off third while in the minors.

Everything I have read says that he is ahead of schedule with the surgery, will make a complete recovery, and will have no long term consequences from it.

You are entitled to your opinion of course, but I think he will be fine. He is my absolute favorite prospect in our system. I hope I’m still around when he makes his debut.

Rainer started out with a cannon… touching mid-90s on the hill in HS… so he could still handle 3B even if he loses some arm strength.

He’s also 6’3” tall and has power at the plate…
not a typical body type for 2B.

Seems like 3B would be his most likely position if he doesn’t stick at SS.

I hear what you’re all saying, and I hope I’m 1000% wrong. However, shoulders can be very tricky & temperamental.

He separated his shoulder. That’s a bad injury. I am really hoping he comes back 100 percent. He looked like he belonged in camp last year.

Even with the shoulder injury, they are fast tracking him for 2028 arrival. Cory Seager is the physical and gameplay comp you see over and over.

Shoulder injuries suck and are tricky. So far nothing negative from the brass on his recovery
