Whittingham to UM; five year deal

IF true, big big time hire by UM

REAKING: Michigan is hiring ex-Notre Dame top personnel executive Dave Peloquin as the new football general manager

Dave was a key fixture inside Notre Dame’s program for 20+ years. He managed NIL, overlooked recruiting, and also served as an assistant Athletic Director for football strategies

Big time hire by Kyle Whittingham

Agreed, this would be a big time hire. Whittingham is definitely leveraging the clout that coaching at U of M gives him over coaching at Utah. It’s a good sign that he’s in it to win a championship.

# New Michigan assistant wants to help Bryce Underwood reach his ‘big goals’

==

New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham, on a podcast with former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, said he was stunned to find out Underwood did not work with a designated quarterbacks coach last season.

“Bryce is a kid that he holds himself to such a high standard, and he has big goals for himself,” Detmer said. “And what I love about Bryce is the kid works his tail off. A lot of kids and a lot of players have high goals for themselves, but maybe the actions or what they do on a day-to-day basis don’t align. And with Bryce, he shows that every single day. He wants to be so great, he wants to be such a good player, and he works his tail off to do so, both in the film study and then in the weight room, working really hard for this spring.”

Detmer said his philosophy regarding coaching quarterbacks is not to change who they are but to tweak and fix where needed.

New quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr., appearing Wednesday on the in-house “In the Trenches” podcast hosted by Jon Jansen, said he is working to help Underwood, who started every game last season, improve various aspects of his skillset.

“It’s just kind of sharpening up his toolbox, so to speak, whether it be with his feet or timing on certain throws and things like that,” Detmer said on the podcast. “We’re spending a lot of time, in the little bit that we get now, to kind of work a little bit one on one after and before weights.

“But the kid is super, super driven, and I’m in a position where I’m just super thankful to be able to work with him, because he’s talented young man. The kid works his tail off to be who he wants to be.

This is wild. I have to say Whittingham has handled this with grace. The most I have heard him say is he didn’t want to over stay his welcome. The stars aligned perfect for him.

“But before Whittingham resigned from Utah and long before he accepted the Michigan job, he attempted to remain as coach in Salt Lake City. However, in the week following the end of Utah’s regular season, a string of emails between Whittingham’s agent, Bruce Tollner, and school administrators outline stark differences in terms of any new deal.

On behalf of the coach, Tollner requested a $1.6 million increase in Whittingham’s salary (from $7.4 million to $9 million), a $20 million figure for “NIL” and an increase of $2 million in his staff salary pool. Three days later on Dec. 6, the school sent Tollner what was perhaps its final offer to the coach: a one-year deal for a salary of $8 million if he were to agree to cede several aspects of the program to Scalley.

For instance, under the proposal, Scalley would have “full and final” oversight in decision-making in areas of football recruiting/player personnel staffing and the general manager position and have “complete decision-making authority” over any football recruiting, roster and staffing matters impacting the program beyond 2026.“

I’ve been reading about this being in the works for the past couple days. What a great opportunity for Bellamy. I’m happy he’s back with the team.
