I think Harrison and Flowers are the biggest offenders based on what they were supposed to deliver. Even Snacks admitted that sitting out camp probably hurt his ability to be ready for the season. I think Quinn bolo’d with him in the offseason. You either pay him and have a guy that big in shape for game one, or you stick to your guns and don’t pay him at all. You don’t wait, then pay him because you gave him what he wanted anyway and he’s been out of shape and a big reason why everyone is running us over up the gut. Flowers has just been a very very high payed average guy. Probably feeling like most others here. Depressed and it isn’t even November yet…
I feel like Flowers is doing much of what he was brought in to do. He could definitely do more, but as we discussed from the time he was signed…fans were never going to be able to fully grasp and appreciate why he was so valuable to this staff or what he contributed to the Pats before he left. I know many teams that have completely overpaid 8 sack type guys with the hopes of them becoming 14 sack guys. Its almost always a bad decision, because many of those guys offer very little value outside of getting sacks. Flowers is different. Flowers brings to the table pretty much everything else you are looking for in and edge player, outside of just sack numbers.
I’m hoping the staff will get a little more creative with its rush scheme going forward. And Flowers can be a major piece of that.
Who’s not doing their job?
On the offense’s side, it’s all of the trench guys including TE. Not the same culprit on every snap, but each of them are inconsistent. They will continue to struggle until the blockers can execute reliably in the run game.
On the defense’s side it’s less about players not doing their job and more about personnel. In this case, I’m saying Bob Quinn isn’t doing his job. Pressuring the QB is not voluntary in the NFL, it’s required. You can scheme pressure, yes, but you also have to have the players capable of executing. Are the injuries to Davis, Daniels, Hand and Bryant exacerbating this? That’s certainly possible. We’ll have to see as the year plays out.
Nah. Fans knew he was a high pressure guy. Wasn’t expected to get 15 sacks, but should have been counted on to be amongst the league leaders in pressures and hurries. He’s not even doing that at a 5 million dollar level. All in all, he’s been a complete disaster and a terrible signing.
Can he turn it around? Sure, but who cares, if he starts playing at an all pro level after we are eliminated from playoff contention? That’s what Snacks did here last year. Stopped a bunch of back up running backs. Idiot Quinn thought that was enough and paid him. Now we got the new and improved Snacks. Leading a terrible run defense.
Have you watched what he’s being assigned to do? The game where he was asked to consistently go after the QB was Philly and he had 6 pressures or something like that. He’s tasked with something else alot of the time.
Cool story, but doesn’t change the fact that the season is 6 games in and he’s been milk carton material for the vast majority of it. A mannequin set up in his position will inadvertently trip up a QB or RB occasionally. He has 1 tackle for loss the entire season. He’s been what you call, irrelevant to the game of football.
Rashaan Melvin is not a #2 CB. He’s in over his head. Tabor might be a faster cover corner than Melvin. (He sucks at NB, too)
Trey Flowers is not a 5-tech DE or 3-tech. He’s an edge player that can kick inside. He’s versatile, yes. Playing him every down where there should be a bigger body like Daniels or Hand is a recipe for failure.
Tavai is a man on the line but I want to see him take off after the QB when he’s left free.
I like Robinson against a single Guard much better than him against an OT or drawing a double-team.
At the same time, I like Okwara out on an OT much more than inside on a Guard.
No, that’s my way of saying you’re making excuses and are full of shit. You have no idea what “he is being asked to do”. I highly doubt you’re in the locker room or film room and I really highly doubt the coaching staff is asking him to be a statue that gets no pressure, no push, makes very few plays, gets pushed around and makes zero impact.
But by all means, keep making up crap to excuse a guy who has played terribly so far.
In your world. Patricia to Flowers - “keep doing what you’re doing. You’re the #1 paid guy on my defense and you are leading our defense to one of the worst in the league. I want opposing quarterbacks to be very comfortable and have as much time as they want. Please do not ever lay a finger on a QB. In fact, RBs are off limits as well. You just stand around and watch with Davis and let the other guys make the plays. Maybe we can reach our total goal and be 32nd in defense instead of 29th. Keep up the good work. I’ll talk to Quinn about an extension.”
It’s not the “film room”, but it certainly is easy to go back and see what’s being asked of him.
They’re playing him as a 3-4 DE. If you want to criticize the team for paying a 3-4 DE as much as they are, you’re perfectly justified in doing so. I assume it’s because he’s also versatile enough to do numerous other things, few of which we’re able to see given the health of the DL.
You can’t play a guy at his position the way he is and then complain when he doesn’t get stats. He’s not playing on the edge like Kennard or Jones. He’s playing in tight on the OT.
Again, you can complain about spending money on that role, but you can’t complain about the player filling the role, IMO.
OKay I have a question for you. What do you believe we should be seeing from a 3-4 DE? It sounds like you have certain expectations and they are not being meant. I am just curious what those expectations are.
He’s tasked with something else besides QB sacks and pressures? What is that exactly?.He’s not doing anything to help the running game either. He’s paid 16m to collapse the pocket and get 7-8 sacks a year like he usually does. He has 1 sack on the year and is grading out relatively poorly in QB hurries.
This is a guy who was one of the best the last few years at QB pressures and outside of a few bursts here and there, he’s been neutralised. I’m sorry but for what he’s being paid, he’s not doing nearly enough. The rare times that I see a Lion forcing a QB out of the pocket, it’s Okwara or occasionally Kennard and Davis on a blitz. Guys that are more visible and getting paid a third or less of what Flowers is making. Not good enough from Trey, not nearly good enough.
Whether you want to blame the player or scheme, it doesn’t matter. They screwed up with this signing, at least in early returns.
