Why it's OK to overreact to this game

So you want to go empty when you can’t protect?

When you get your asses whooped up front good options are quite limited.

Were we one of the best? My sense has been that under Dan are screen game has often been worse than it could or should be.

But it was definitely ugly yesterday.

I’m going off of the sky cam replays, you can see the receivers down field and they’re all still running by the time Goff has pressure in his lap. So either Goff isn’t seeing the pressure pre snap and making a check, or it’s just bad play calling/design.

They used to run A LOT of bunch formation concepts with Ben, rub routes and such designed to pressure the defense… I see almost none of those this year.

I’ll keep saying this as well, Leaf is a wasted WR on the field… He has less targets in 8 games than Tim Patrick had in 6 last year, while learning a new offense and team… And his yards per reception is half of what TP’s was. They’re not stressing the defense enough IMO… It really just seems like they’re lining up and saying, go win the match up instead of scheming guys open. In fact, I seem to remember Morton saying something like that in training camp, about isolating guys and letting them win.

I also had to go at a sports bar to watch the game so my ability to go back and rewatch a certain replay wasn’t there.

What I did notice in replays in real time was their defenders defeating our blocks, sometimes even double teams, with regularity.

if people want to blame the scheme or play-calling that is fine. I am just trying to be fair and acknowledging that we don’t know what we don’t know. But we do know what it looks like when a blocker gets his ass whooped and I saw that quite a bit.

I don’t think we use nearly enough horizontal action whether pre or post snap. I think we under-utilized jet motion under Ben and we see even less of it now.

Those kind of critiques are easy for me to get behind bc we see it. Play calls and scheme have so much nuance and so many permutations that our objections as fans are IMO on unsteady footing.

I agree with alot you say here, yesterday it’s hard to judge the play calling when your guys are just getting beat. Play calling didn’t beat us yesterday, blocked FG , a fumble, drop balls missed throws, getting beat on both lines. And we still lost by 3. Plays were there to win, but execution was terrible yesterday.

But even with all that said, the offense seems more predictable and the setting teams up seems to have disappeared. There is justst a big difference in the offense in my opinion.

I think a lot of Ben’s creativity was in terms of layering stuff on tops of previously successful concepts. We need to convert third downs and then we will see more of what may of you are clamoring for.

Something I heard on a podcast today… Gibbs was responsible for 3 sacks? Holy hell… I remember seeing him get blown up by a defender for one sack, didn’t realize it was 3!!

Does he never cut block guys?

I saw a tweet saying he gave up the most pressures a running back has given up in 5 years

Matches how that felt yesterday

one more thing about Goff, he ‘can’ throw deeper passes-yet he must have the time and pass pro to let those develop, screens only work IF you throw them FORWARD for some kind of plus yardage. you CAN NOT throw across or behind the LOS, and be productive-yet Morton keeps burning downs trying to do that over and over….it’s just wasted opportunity when we have the ball.

I must of missed the “trade Gibbs” thread.

Really looks like GG needed to hand that DT off to Ratledge and get an arm on #0
