With current DT market soaring, Do the Lions Pay Alim McNeill over $20M?

This is the reason why I believe Hendon Hooker will ultimately take over.

I pay McNeil $10-12 million a year… That’s more than OTC says his valuation is ($8 million APY) and fair given his ups and downs… If he balls out this year, push it to 15

And become a more consistent threat in the pass rush.

And stop getting injured.

And somehow gain the right mentality for this coaching staff.

And put on about 20 lbs (at least).

Wait?
He just lost 50lbs.

I wouldn’t pay him half that.

We gave Reader less than half that.

Mike Hall lost 50 pounds?

You guys lost me. I skipped a couple posts, obviously. I assumed you were talking about Alim.

I think people need to understand the evolution of the cap. Truly elite DT are making 30mil+ now and the cap increases aren’t slowing down anytime soon. Pro bowl level players are looking at 24mil+ and high end starters in the 16-20 range.

If we don’t extend McNeil this offseason for 14-16mil, we will regret it, IMO. He was already coming on as an elite player prior to his injury and I expect another jump playing next to Reader.

I’ve said it before but I have a feeling Alim will bet on himself this year and pass up an early extension (if Brad has even offered) to have a chance at a breakout year in 2024. If he can stay healthy and get 10+ sacks, he’s gonna get 20+ from somebody if it’s not us.

I think we will extend Goff… but if Hooker is on fire in training camp and preseason that would sure be a great problem to have.

Aside from that how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

I really, really liked Hall in 2022. Definitely not the Junior year that everyone had in mind Talented kid though.

I was being a bit hyperbolic in that last post. He does have several things I think he needs to work on to hit his potential in the NFL and to be on our draft board.

Agree with your assessment.

Hell No.

I’ll start with Iffy - he’s the least important to worry about right now IMO. He has a lot to prove this year, and you want him as motivated as possible. He’s got to show he can stay healthy. Plus the safety market is in a lull right now clearly. Brandon Jones just got a FA starting deal that averaged a relatively reasonable 6.6/m a year. I view a new deal with Iffy being the least important right now.

I’m then going to the other extreme which is that you have to extend both Goff and St Brown ASAP. These are foundational identity pieces for this franchise. Get them both done as soon as you’re able to focus on them this summer.

I think Davis and McNeil are both in similar boats in the middle. They are young guys, in their primes, looking for a pay day. Both need big years. And from the Lions stand point - you unleash them this year. See what they’ve got. You always have the franchise tag available should you need it. But I think you play them this year in a contract year knowing they have max motivation.

Lastly, I think Sewell gets done next offseason with a record breaking deal. Has to.

We missed our chance on Alim to get a bargain contract. I thought he was our highest priority before FA started. Either way, we’re not getting a bargain with him. We sure missed a window, and its going to cost us either way. Of course, it takes two to agree, and it couldbe that he is just betting on himself.

I’m really surprised that we haven’t locked up Ra yet. He’s everything this org is about. Sewell too, but its less of a priority with the fifth year option. I would also wait on Goff, Iffy and Carlton, each for slightly different reasons, but mostly to see if they can duplicate good years.

Priorities:
Ra
McNeill
Sewell
Davis
Goff
Iffy

No I don’t hate Goff, he led us to two playoff wins. its just that QB performance can vary alot from year to year.

Could still sign several of these guys to an extension this offseason yet. I think the villain is focused on the draft right now. But after the draft he can get down to business on some of these contract extensions. We shall see what happens. And they may already have some agreements in place… but need to sort out some fine details on the extensions.

I believe there is a way to ensure our roster talent in 2024 and beyond.

  • Amon Ra is the #1 priority period! He’s given his mind and body and made just about 3M total, and he needs to know ā€œwe got himā€. Pay the guy 4 years and $100M in ā€œnew moneyā€ and he’d be behind Hill, Adams, Kupp and tied with AJ Brown. Seems like a win/win

  • Decker is a guy that adding 2 years and 38M with 25M total new guaranteed feels like a no brainer. He could retire here and if he falls off in 24-25’, then we could cut in 26’.

  • Goff is the guy who changed it all. They are chanting his name at the freaking Mets stadium! Give him 3 years and 150M in new money- and again appease the 50M new money AAV stigma, but it’s really 45.5M per over 4, and I love that deal.

  • Sewell is getting 5 years and 135M, it is what it is Unlike ARSB, he’s already made 20M plus- so he’s not risking his future every time he steps on the field. We rightfully have 2 years left… wait til offseason next year.

As for Alim? He’s been a good player who had one great year, albeit one he missed 1/3 of with injuries. He’s not a 20M plus per year guy- he’s not. He’s young. I would plan to play him this year and franchise him in 25’ if need be. I would be willing to offer a 3 year 48M extension right now. I don’t expect him to say yes, so we ride out 2024….

—- I am 100% on board with Byron Murphy, B Fiske, Ruke O, D Carter, K Jenkins, or L Taylor etc…. I see 4/5 guys with nice 3 tech skill sets that could supplement or be Alim insurance.

G Barton- OG/C
Ruke O- 3T
R Green- CB (outside)
Sione Vaki- SS
Brennan Jackson- DE
Nathan Thomas- OT
J Karty- K

Sign DJ Chark or M Gallup for a 1 year… and maybe J Simmons on a nice 2 year deal.

The DT in 2 along with Reader and Bro Mart and Paschal inside makes Alim less dire if numbers are off

They can just pay Sewell now. He’s the best player on the team. The only guy who smells like a hall of fame player.

When Goff wins a SB this year, and is top 4/5 in MVP voting, and has 1-2 other deep playoff runs…. He’s 6 years and 4,400 a year from being top 15 all time passing. I think he makes top 15 in playoff wins as well.

Sewell feels like a lock, and Amon could be in that convo if Goff and the line stay intact.
