He has elite arm talent, but not much else to go with it.

You are correct, his arm strength is amazing and he can run.
I’m not sure what his problem is right now. If he just can’t read defenses or he’s rushing his throws with bad mechanics or what. He’s got all the tools, he just has to somehow get them all in place and try to become at least a solid QB.

I’m stuck in uncertainty, not knowing how many times talents like Wilson are failed by coaching and how many times it’s just because the QB can’t develop the precision required to play at this level. With Wilson, you almost want to see him paired with different coaches just to see.

I said before the draft he was far and away the most likely QB in that draft to bust. The areas he struggled were glossed over by his live arm and unique ability to make off-platform throws. But he had very few NFL reps on his tape, wasn’t really tested as a processor, and was never noted as much of a leader. He was always a major project.

I think the best thing for Zach Wilson is to get a fresh start as a back up QB somewhere else. He needs time to spend with a great QB coach and no pressure to immediately start. He’s already made enough money to he could live a comfortable life going forward.

Does he have the “grit” to suck it up and be “just a guy trying to earn a back up QB spot”. Forget fame. Forget fortune. Does he have what it takes to dedicate himself to earning his way back into the good graces of a new team ??

Wilson is due a $2.9 million roster bonus in 2023. I don’t think there is a trade market the way his current contract his set up. If it was just the salary, it would be fine to trade for him. But those roster bonuses make it impossible ($4.4 million in 2024). I think the Jets are going to cut him prior to that roster bonus being due.

If the kid has some humility, keeps his mouth shut and is willing to put in the work, I could see him still making it as an NFL QB.

It wasn’t super serious, that comparison, but some of the frozen rope throws did conjure. And we did live off late game comebacks with 50/50 balls to the end zone. That was Calvin’s best trick for a few years.

I would happily sign him as a developmental QB. Let him learn from MCDC and Ben with no pressure to play.
