A 16 team playoff sounds like a done deal. As soon as next year.
However a 24 team playoff is coming soon enough they just cant agree on the formatting.
Heres my idea on the formatting.
No more Conference champ games.
Auto bids.
Top 1 from each group of 6 (pac12).
Top 2 from the power 4.
10 next highest ranked
Seeding
All seeding is by rank order!
Top 8 (first round bye) 4 power 4 champs plus next 4 highest ranked (again seeded in rank order)
9-24 in rank order (however no in conference rematches: Reseed the lower seeds 17-24)
1st & 2nd rounds are home games for higher seeds.
Quarter finals - Peach, Orange, Fiesta & Cotton Bowls
Semi finals - Rose and Sugar bowls
National championship rotates locations (Dome and southern NFL stadiums)
First round starts the very next week after week 14
So for 2029 (the proposed first year for the 24 format)
Saturdays
12/8/29 - Week 14
12/15/29 - First Round
12/22/29 - Second Round
12/29/29 - Quarter Finals
1/5/30 - Semi Finals
Monday - 1/14/30 National Champ.
Why so late on a Monday?
Because that is the last week of the regular season for the NFL. They dont play on monday.
Heres a bracket if they had it this year

At some point why even have a season/ postseason distinction

I get it but its the only sport in college or pros that doesnt have a major playoff.
Nfl 32 teams 14 playoff team
FCS ~130 teams 24 playoff teams
High school (ohio and Michigan) ~120 schools 64 playoff teams
FBS 136 teams only 12 playoff teams.
24 teams is still below average. But at least it matches every other level of football. With around decent chuck of teams making it.

God no. Let’s reward teams for losing 3 or 4 games. Another reason the sport i used to love is cracking into pieces

Way too many but whatever. Just going to be a bunch of blowouts first round. There aren’t 24’ teams that can afford the NIL to compete in today’s system.
The 10th seed (lowest ranked P4 school) is in the national title game. Just to put everything into perspective.
You cant have it both ways is the issue.
You want a small playoff? 4-8 teams? Cool everyone is gonna be scheduling Michigan Tech for their non conference.
Whats more impressive?
A 10-2 teams that lost 2 of its ONLY 3 big games?
Or a 8-4 team that actually played 6 big games?
having a small playoff means teams will only play 2-4 decent games the entire season. How can you possibly judge how REALLY good team is if they only played 4 games.
Vs a bigger playoff. Means more teams will be willing to schedule a good non conference game.
You think Texas will schedule another big game? Or Notre Dame? No they are gonna be hitting up every FCS school.

Was really fun to watch the Red Birds from Illinois play in the FCS championship game. If FCs was using the current CFB model they wouldn’t have even made the playoffs

Thats my point. Especially with the 24team model. No confidence champ games.
So instead of 10 pointless games. Add another round of the playoffs.
