2023 NFL trade deadline proposed deals: Marquise Brown to Chiefs, Brian Burns to Ravens and 13 other moves

Lions acquire DL Leonard Williams

  • Lions get: DL Leonard Williams
  • Giants get: 2024 third-round pick

Detroit’s defense is on the rise, and with a legit playoff push in sight thanks to a 5-1 start, Williams could be a bonus addition next to Aidan Hutchinson, giving them a more fearsome front. New York’s own “D” is staying relatively competitive, but at 1-5, the G-Men should be selling, and their former prized trade acquisition is on an expensive, expiring contract.

I’d love to add a talent like Williams, but isn’t he a bit of a character concern?

Honestly, don’t know.

He’s expensive: Leonard Williams Contract Breakdowns, Salary Cap Figures, Salaries, Bonuses | Spotrac

And, the Lions aren’t getting vintage 2020-2021 LW, but 29 year old LW with declining productiton:

I’d be more inclined to package a 5th Rd pick with Levi O.

Zach Ertz for a 6th? Might have to jump on that one too

What a time to be a journalist.

All you have to do is throw a bunch of crap at the wall, get clicks and eyeballs, rinse and repeat.

Seems really cheap.

Yeah, give me Trent Brown at that price over anyone else. Our O-line is where we live and die and we have rotating injuries based on who’s the least injured right now.

We gave up a 4th and 2 5ths for Brodric Martin
I’d have no problem giving up a 5 and 6 for those 2 guys Trent Brown and Ertz

Than just trade down from Minnesota’s early 3rd and recoup them picks on draft day.

BOOM

i think its cause of contracts and all that jazz tbh

i dont mind williams, we need DB and DL help still i feel, But id say its easier to get a Dlineman/Dend than a quality CB right now

I don’t think Brad or Dan are viewing this as a last-gasp season that requires mortgaging the future. I’d be surprised by any trade that digs into future draft capital or compromises Brad’s ability to extend Goff, Sewell or St Brown before the 2024 season.

Mortgage our future if it means Pat Surtain, he’s 23 and his timeline is right with ours.

I would love to have Mr. Surtain on the team.

It’s about a price point. If Denver is trading Surtain, there will be stiff competition for him. It’s likely that other GM’s will paid more for the sugar than Brad will. It’s unlikely that Brad will welcome negotiations with Surtain in 2025 when he’ll have so many other mouths to feed on our team already.

Might could happen though if my mindmeld with Brad is faulty…

I love Surtain but I just don’t see how the money works out. If you extend Goff pay Sewell and St. Brown, then the money for Surtain gets really tight. So your essentially giving 2 firsts + and giving up those combined 10 years of low contract high talent opportunities for an great player you won’t be able to afford in 2 years.

While Surtain is an upgrade is he a big enough upgrade to make that trade when we are already playing lights out defense? And can we afford to keep him long term?

Surtain I’d say yes because we could structure him in that window …

St Brown & McNeil and Decker UFA 2025
Sewell option year 25 UFA 2026

Hutch, Jamo, Laporta, Branch, Ragnow UFA 2027
Gibby & Campbell option year 2027

Could squeeze in Surtain before all that gets messy

The only reason you’d trade for Surtain is because you’re 7-1 and think you’ve got a legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl this season–the same reason the Rams mortgaged their future to obtain Stafford.

However, given how well Sutton has played, and with Jacobs improving with more experience, there may be a less costly option out there who could be procured for considerably less than what Surtain would cost in both draft capital and $$.

We are 1 injury away from having

Lucas
Will Harris or Iffy
Or Having to move Branch from nickel

Surtain is a must if it’s possible they’d part with him.

Can’t see that they would …

I think it’s fair to say that The Den has as many takes on what Brad should do as there are members…

That’s pretty typical for us lol

As Jman pointed out, we’re one injury away from being dangerously thin at CB. Not only that, I keep cautioning people on this defense - we’ve played some really, really bad offenses. KC didn’t have Kelce and they dropped a LOT of passes. Tampa has a lot of talent at WR, but Mayfield is crap. Not only that, they did absolutely toast us deep on at least 3 plays where one was tipped and Mayfield over threw the other two.

I do think our secondary is much improved, especially when Branch is back. BUT, we’re playing with fire with our lack of depth(losing CJGJ and Mosely are killers) and we haven’t exactly played the who’s who of offenses yet by any stretch of the imagination.
