2023 Return on UFA investment

Nice article by Troy @texanscap. He used to do the Houston’s cap before Jason got OTC going, now he helps Jason and Nick at OTC.com

https://twitter.com/TexansCap/status/1758138815405814232

He put together an article that pulled all the Free agent signings (didn’t included RFA’s, ERFA, restructures or extensions) . . . wish he would have removed UFA’s that re-signed with their own teams (i.e. Buggs, Cominsky and Anzalone are all included in the Lions UFA signings, all three were signed at the start of UFA, all could have been extensions or new contracts, as it didn’t change anything).

But it’s a nice breakdown that shows APY of a player (not the goofy cap hits) compared to their value as determined by OTC using data from PFF.

Also included in the article is a link to his 2022 article doing the same thing.

For the Lions 2023 UFA’s include:
Sutton - $11
CJGJ - $6.5
Anzalone - $6.1
Mosley - $6
Montgomery - $6
Cominsky - $4.25
Glasgow - $4.15
Marvin Jones - $3
Buggs - $2.25

Definitely a mixed bag. A few real nice hits with Monty, GG, and Anzalone.

A few bad misses too. It happens. Injuries being a big factor of course.

Holmes has been an A+ drafter… more like a B in free agency though. Still great overall before a certain poster comes yelling at me… haha

I’d put Mosely as Incomplete

Just like his ACL’s… incomplete.

I’m a Will Harris fan… but can we implant his ACL’s into Moseley!? :joy:

Take 1 for the team Will. You still get a super bowl ring.

The good news was he forced an incompete pass. The bad news is that it was an incompletely passed physical.

Marvin Jones was a flat F.

Yup literally a waste of snaps.

Yeah, both of them. LOL

How much did we end up paying him? Surely leaving mid-season meant we didn’t dole out his whole contract, although honestly I have no idea how it was structured.

But if it’s weighted for how much he cost us, I wouldn’t think it would qualify as that bad of a miss at all.

Maybe some will disagree here, but I’d attempt to bring back Chark on a cheap deal. At the very least he and Goff have a repoire. Can’t be any worse than DPJ and Marvin Jones combined.

The return value is zero. I’d like to find a Brockers-like silver lining, but for even a single game check, his return warrants an F.

Anyway, that’s how I get to an F. No biggie

I just think that like a UDFA, if they give us anything it’s a bonus. Failing isn’t an F, it’s expected.

Now obviously Jones got more than a UDFA but there were quite a few of us on here saying if we got anything out of him, it would be gravy. So it’s hard for me to say it’s an F when he did about what I expected (though again it would depend on what we actually paid him).

Brought this up last week talking to @Tcmouse

I like it. Chark on a cheap 1 year deal. He already know the system… Goff and Ben Johnson.

Sure he might get injured but cheap incentive based deal. Might work for both parties. At least he provides decent depth.

Moseley’s current ACLs, I promise, are better than his last set of ACLs. People usually have stronger ligaments once they replace them.

Truth to that for sure. Also often takes up to 2 years to start feeling and moving like you used to and often never feel right again. Still think he’s worth a cheap flyer though.

I expect he signs with no one until August at the earliest so teams can have their doctors check him out.

Can’t get with that because his cap number was real. Yes injuries happen, but when you get someone who can’t start camp because he’s still rehabbing injury, you are taking on added risk and for us, it bit.

4.25M for 2 sacks and 12 pressures? I know he does “the dirty work” and all, but I can’t give that a B. He was another one of the many “try hard” guys that aren’t helping Hutch and Alim get any pressure and thus giving QB’s 140 QB ratings…

The important thing is that he didnt miss big. It’s not much of a problem to eat a 4 or 5 million dollar bad contract.

It’s when you start missing on those top of the market FA contacts that will kill your cap.

Exactly! The biggest miss was Moseley. And every team has a detrimental injury like that.

But yea no big deal to eat 4-5m in cap vs 15-20
