Yes, chip was the qb coach.He was also the offensive coordinator. Thus the dedicated comment, as this year there is a coach who only coaches the qb’s.
My understanding of last year and this year difference
They had a coach last year who made exactly the same salary, who did exactly the same job as Detmer last year, coach the QB’s. One was labeled an “analyst” (last years QB coach) the other is labeled a “qb coach” (this years QB coach) to please the fans.
Maybe this is partially Moore’s fault for not giving his staff the correct titles, even if they’re doing exactly what Witt’s staff is and making the same amount of money

That narrative actually didn’t come from the media. It came directly from Wittingham in an interview.
He was new to the job & got the narrative from the media. That’s how it started, he didn’t start it, he just repeated it. He’s still learning his players names at this point, I’m not saying that as a bad thing. Im very pro Wittingham. I’m just saying this is how CFB coaching changes work
Edit to add: in hindsight this is clearly mostly Moore’s fault for not labeling the previous “QB Coach” as a QB Coach. At least Witt is doing the right thing and labeling the QB coach as such

Travis Russell, I wouldn’t consider him a dedicated coach in the way people are thinking, but an assistant QB coach was one of his duties.
Regardless of whether you believe Underwood had a dedicated QB coach or not, he did not develop, his mechanics weren’t good and often times looked confused (common for a freshman). Most of that falls on coaching, specifically the head coach. I wasn’t a fan of Moore (he was in over his head) and initially wasn’t a huge fan of this hire. Granted we haven’t seen them play yet, but I now believe this was the perfect hire. A stabilizing force, with experience, who does things the right way, is known for his in game coaching and ability to develop players. He’ll allow us time to identify, possibly develop a new head coach and these young coordinators know they have the perfect opportunity.

Supposedly Underwood has had moments of looking very good during Fall Camp. He looked almost like the same player during the spring game as he did last season, so I’m looking forward to seeing the Fall camp version of Underwood. Maybe it officially clicked for him this summer/fall, we’ll see, he’s still extremely young.

Also a bit of a misleading statement because schedules were much shorter for mich of the 20th century. Hard to win 11 games if you are only playing 10.
