I think Shep gets a pass for last season.
He seemed to be more willing to make adjustments sooner than AG was and the defense got decimated, again, by injuries last season.
He seems to be a good, strong “leader of men” coach.

I think this is a bias that MCDC has which isn’t serving him well.
The defense has been holding this team back for essentially all of Dan’s tenure. While there have been some worst-case injury scenarios, I believe that’s been compounded by schemes that only work in a narrow band of better scenarios.
This team needs a DC that can put in a strong scheme and can adapt successfully when things aren’t going to script. A strong Xs and Os technician on the defensive side is what’s lacking right now.
I’m not saying Shep isn’t or can’t become that guy. But if he’s not, that’s likely going to keep the team from the highest levels of success.
