Yes the topic has been beaten to death but this continues to be a problem and is part of the reason why the offense is bugging down too much this season.
Here are the stars for the Lions “#3” receivers…
Raymond - 3 rec. 27 yards
Patrick - 3 rec. 17 yards
This would barely be acceptable for 1 game but for 3? Yeah, yikes.
The Lions have largely gotten away with it thus far but this isn’t sustainable for long term success especially when you have a QB that heavily depends on having a security blanket to quickly throw to.
Holmes needs to address this, I don’t think they can depend on a guy who has multiple serious injuries and hasn’t played in 2 years to fill that void on a Superbowl contending team.
That’s fair but I don’t believe that Tim Patrick is the answer, he’s been out of the game too long to be relied upon. I guess we’ll see but I’m thinking this will be a season long issue until it’s addressed externally.
I stand by the fact that goff struggling has had much more to do with the offenses lack of success vs the #3 wr. It would be nice to have a better option but considering that they would/will need to be on the field over gibbs, laporta, or Montgomery to really “drive” this offense from the #3 spot… i think goff needs to just stop throwing to the wrong color this year. He should start playing better (this week was a good start) and maybe monday night is when the offense starts putting some point up.
Patrick is the perfect #3 “X” receiver for this team. Goff and him will need time to get familiar. You can’t drop a player into this offense, which relies heavily on timing, and expect them to gel quickly. They’ll be better after the bye and should be completely in sync by the playoffs
My bigger issue with the WR situation is can we please scheme Jamo more touches? We need to use him on those swing passes to the flats more often IMO. The Chiefs do it to death with Worthy and Rice. It would basically function as an extension of the run game and I believe it would even further soften the spine of the defense.
I must have misunderstood your post then, I posted the combined numbers of Patrick and Reynolds which is 6 receptions, 44 yards through 3 games and your reply was that those numbers combined are what Reynolds put up.
I then posted the numbers Reynolds put up through 3 games which blew those out of the water so what am I missing?
Also, the Reynolds season long numbers deserve some context. Just about all of those receptions were for 1st downs or TDs. He was an integral part of this offense last season.
I’d love nothing more than for this thread to be bumped and for me to look like an idiot after Patrick has some good games but, for now, I think it’s a valid concern.
So darnold is a MVP candidate reportedly but his #3 reciever through three games is brandon powell.
Difference right now, goff has thrown 4 interceptions through 3 games and darnold has thrown 2…
Goff overall just needs to play better and prptect the ball. Yesterday was a great start, but if he protects the damn ball and laporta gets involved more i dont see the targets this #3 wr is going to get as being as impactful as this board feels they will.
