Yes, but to be fair that fullback is special. even more of a head-scratcher is that he gave Jerick McKinnon a 4-year 32 million-dollar contract despite his injury history and unless I’m mistaken I don’t think McKinnon has ever played a single down in regular season in the first two plus years of that contract
Quin has been in place less time than any GM we have had in the last 5 decades. Mayhew was in place more than twice as long as Quinn. Millen was in place almost 3x the time Quinn has been in place.
And the team and roster has gotten worse each and every season. Why in the world should he get more time when there isn’t a single sign that he done anything to improve the team?
Personally I am trying to keep the fate of Quinn and Patricia separate. If Quinn fires Patricia at the end of the year, I’m willing to give him one more coaching hire. But if Quinn keeps Patricia, in my mind I would then have to tie both of their fates together. If we chit the bed again in 2020 with Patricia in charge, I’m going to be calling for Quinn to be fired as well.
Because sometimes you have to tear it down before you can build it up. You can’t just turn over your entire roster in one season. There are contracts in place and you can only draft and sign so many players in a season. Not to mention one of his offseason’s was for Caldwell
Only fans want to fire the GM every 3 years. In reality that is not the case. Millen had 8 years, Mayhew had 7 years. Quinn will get at least 6 most likely. But we better start to swing upwards the next couple seasons or that wont be the case.
To be clear, you are the same guy who claims 3 win teams are completely broken beyond repair and are in a whole other planet than 4 and 5 win teams, right? The magical 3 win number is something that deserves a complete rebuild and fire sale. I distinctly remember you being hung up on that specific win total (as if 3 or 4 wins really makes much of a difference), but you did. So, if we lose out, you still want to give them 1 more year? Why the change of heart?
I said I would give Quinn another year. I’ve said for a while now that even without Stafford, I don’t want to give Patricia another year if we lose out or come close to losing out. It means he’s lost the team.
And yes, when you have 3 or less wins on the season…there are some MAJOR things that have to go wrong. Its more than just a bad year. Its a dumpster fire of a season, which is why so few teams win so few games. I said that 4 wins is kind of a grey area. Then you start getting into the 5 and 6+ win seasons. The difference between 6 wins and 3 wins is pretty big. Its not “just 3 games.”
That’s an interesting way of spinning a big negative into a positive when most of Quinn’s wins came early in his tenure with Mayhew’s players in his 1st season whereas Lynch’s best season was with his players in his 3rd season and the 2nd season was derailed by their starting QB going down early in the season.
This is the way I look at it. I think if you fired Quinn there is probably a 50% chance you would find a worse GM with the next hire. If you fire Patricia there is a 5% chance you would find a worse coach. You can do worse than Quinn but not Patricia.
Quinn has made some mistakes, but at the same time he has also made some very shrewd moves( his handling of the WR position has been A+ for example) He doesn’t swing for the fences in the draft enough, and I don’t like how he signs guys like Lang and Daniels, but he has shown enough to warrant possibly staying. Patricia on the other hand has done absolutely nothing aside from being a complete and total disgrace. I honestly can’t think of one thing he has done well, aside from maybe hiring Bevell. I am ok if Quinn stays… IF he fires Patricia… but he gets a very short 2 year leash. Admit your mistake, improve and move onto finding the best coaching candidate possible. YOU find the best players available and start swinging for the fences.
Quinn will keep Patricia one more season. He won’t fire his buddy after 2 seasons.
If we are less than 9-7 next year Quinn will have zero choice but to fire his buddy…if he does not, then he has tied his fate to Patricia’s success or lack thereof.
If Quinn fires Patricia this season or next he will get one more HC hire. If Quinn doesn’t fire Patricia this year or next then Quinn and Patricia will be locked at the hip and either get fired together after two more seasons or we will have moved into contender status.
That is the reality. I personally am now skeptical of Patricia but I will not be surprised nor upset if he comes back. In fact I fully expect him to be back.
Yet, you’re on record saying you want to keep the person who is most responsible for the 3 win season? BTW if you want Patricia fired, then you are saying he was a terrible hire. The man who hired him is responsible for that as well. Why does Quinn get a 5 year free pass in your mind? What are you seeing as a positive with him? What makes you think he has the ability to hire a better coach than his BFF from NE?
I believe in giving a GM several coaching hires to try to get things right. If he fires Patricia at the end of this season, I would give him one more coaching hire before moving on. However, if he keeps Patricia at the end of this season…I would tie Quinn’s fate to Patricia at that point.
I hope your leash is longer than Martha’s, because not only did he not conduct a real coaching search, which is criminal in itself, he also depleted the roster and made the team worse year over year since he was hired. No doubt in my mind the team he inherited had more talent than the current roster when healthy. The Tate trade was cute and the Golladay pick was great, but it’s few and far between. The majority of his moves have either hurt the team or made little to zero impact. That shouldn’t be rewarded.
I disagree. I think the talent is improved but the coaching has gotten worse. Quinn took over the 2015 roster.
QB - Matt Stafford: Same guy
RB - While this isn’t a good group, I think people like what we have now more than Ameer Abdullah backed up with a 30 year old Joique Bell.
WR - Calvin retired, leaving us with Golden Tate, TJ Jones and Lance Moore. There is no doubt this position is better.
TE - Eric Ebron and Brandon Pettigrew to TJ Hockenson, Jesse James and Logan Thomas. I think the talent is improved, but we need to coach and use them better.
OL - I’m not sure how to feel about this one.
DL - When Ziggy was healthy, he was probably better than anyone we’ve got on the current line. But the talent dropped off pretty quick after that. We have alot more depth and contributors with our current unit.
LB - While our current crop isn’t full of world beaters, the 2015 team had a retiring Stephen Tulloch, Josh Bynes and Tahir Whitehead.
CB - This was Slay, Lawson and a 35 year old Rashean Mathis. We’ve improved this unit.
S - Glover Quin was still playing at a high level, but I think Bob did a good job replacing him with Tracy Walker. James Ihedigbo is a downgrade from Tavon Wilson, IMO. Quandre Diggs hadn’t made the move to safety yet.
Agreed; as was the Lions season when Stafford went down. It wasn’t “spin” it is simply fact. I’m not a Patricia supporter,
but I don’t think at this juncture he will be fired. If he is I’m okay with it because it’s some point there has to be results in the form of wins. But frankly none of our opinions or thoughts, including mine, carry any weight whatsoever with the team, imho, so beyond each others amusement of conservational interactions our opinions are a moot point
Might be the rosiest take possible, but I won’t kill ya for it. My take:
QB - Stafford. Yeah, same guy, much older and now injured 2 years in a row. The GM put no back up on the roster and now we are trotting out garbage. He ignored the most important position group completely and went to Sav-a-lot to address the most important position group in week 10.
RB - INC. Can’t say he’s improved it, since our best production came from a guy we got from the Walmart parking lot in week 10. KJ is the flavor of the week. We have recycled a lot of guys like him since Barry. Not sure he is an above average NFL RB yet. Still a huge position of need.
WR - Might be Quinn’s entire claim to fame. It’s not an elite position group, but it’s not an issue either. Needs to resign or replace DA and decide on the other 2 starters. WR is the last position group I would fill on a team, but it’s the only one Quinn currently has in line.
TE - Not sure how we went from having the worst TE group in the league last year to having even less production this year. All we have right now are names. Sure we invested a top 8 pick, but until he actually does something, it’s hard to credit BQ here. So far a huge swing and a miss with a #8 pick and a ton of cash thrown at James who is useless.
OL - No discernable difference. Decker was a miss. Extending him isn’t a great idea, but I have no faith Quinn can replace him either. Ragnow is fine. I got nothing else. Both tackles are expendable and well below league average.
DL - There is some talent here. Scheme may be the cause for them being AWOL most of the year.
LB - I don’t think we have a single legit NFL starting caliber LB on the roster. Davis is a bust and should not be extended. Extending Jones made no sense. Tavai was a colossal reach and Kennard is serviceable, but not a starter on a good defense. No improvement.
CB - Best player after 4 years is a 4 year older Slay who is showing more and more cracks as he ages. Coleman has had flashes, but this position group gets exposed every week and to bad QBs and rookie QBs. Tackling sucks.
S - Walker is solid. That’s all we have. Wilson is all bark no bite in my mind. Harris has been abysmal, but will not close the book on him yet.
Special teams is still lead by the same kicker and punter who seemed to be regressing. Return game had a couple splashes and a lot of brain farts.
