Nah, he was erratic at Michigan too. He has a cannon leg, but very little control. The reason it wasn’t as bad in college is remember in college the uprights are a good deal wider. Even then he missed kicks. It’s crazy, moving to a league with narrower uprights brought out accuracy issues? Color me shocked.
Where I am shocked is, FINALLY Kyle Shanahan admits the mistake. 49ers fans have been going crazy, and even the team was turning it’s back on Moody.
Nick Saldiveri’s been great in NO. Pushed his way into the starting lineup… though then he got hurt. Chamarri Conner’s a starter on that great Chiefs D, and Herbig’s been a really good flame thrower for Pittsburgh. Chase Brown, SirVocea Dennis, Karl Brooks, Kayshon Boutte, Iosivas, Tanner McKee, Pop Douglas, Dee Winters, Jaylon Jones, Andrew Vorhees, Ojomo… There’s been some hits. Maybe not to the level of Puka, but good NFL players. And there are very few guys that hit to the level of Puka on day 3.
Plus guys like Keaton Mitchell, Tyson Bagent, Ronnie Hickman, Blake Grupe, Jake Bobo, Christian Izien, your boy Ivan Pace and our own Jake Bates were all UDFAs and available to be drafted.
Man if you spend a 3rd on a kicker, that guy better be something special. Thought he was good at UM but never thought of him as a generational kicker. Then to be so bad he had to be cut after 2 years…my goodness. That’s Millenesque.
Moody and Ryland went in the 3rd and 4th that year respectively, neither is on his drafting team.
Cade York went in the 4th in 2022 and I think is out of the league. He’s been on like 10 teams already.
Roberto Aguayo was a 2nd round pick and an immediate flameout.
Alex Henery was a 4th round pick and out of the league 3 years later. (A Howie Roseman pick)
Mike Nugent was a 2nd round pick of the Jets and played on ten teams in 15 seasons.
Nate Kaeding was a 3rd round pick, and while he lasted a long time with the Chargers, he was never all that great.
Jeff Chandler and Travis Dorsch were 4th rounders this century. Never heard of them? Yeah, me either.
Janikowski wasn’t a bust, but he was a 1st rounder. I think everyone agrees he wasn’t worth that.
Even if we stretch it to the 5th round it’s pretty bleak. Of the 12 this century, only Evan McPherson and Josh Scobee had appreciable careers with the team that drafted them (and Scobee wasn’t great). Some would go on to latch on with other teams, like Daniel Carlson and Jake Elliott, but most were flameouts or journeymen.
I think drafting a kicker before the 6th-ish is about the worst draft investment you can make.
In that post of doom, I’m surprised you didn’t mention Jason Hansen being a 2nd rounder - very rare though based on your list. I’m with you though, I would never draft a kicker before round 6, maybe round 5 if he walks on water.
He was about the only smash hit, but I was only going back through the start of the century. Football before that almost feels like a different game, though I’m not sure kicking has changed that much outside of leg strength.
I am sure he is as confused as the next guy on why he now sucks.
I will say that the whole Bates thing is interesting to me. Because dude literally dialed it in while kicking for the Lions. That tells me that the Lions have a very good kicking coach and that Bates is willing to listen and is coachable.
Again the Moody thing is odd because he has leg talent and why he was unable to improve should be studied so others can learn. I doubt he is an idiot or douche so clearly he got stuck and no one could unstick him.
Also I am shocked he was let into the building on Monday of this week. Why did it take until today?
