4th Round, Pick 132: Lions select S Sioni Vaki

Yes when the ball is in your hands regarding instincts. I would beg to differ on the blocking piece though. Typically it can get pretty complex regarding the Mike point, slide, who’s responsible for which free runner etc

Oh I know, I just think he has a leg up as a defensive player who blitzed, kind of like the QB who switched to LB having a leg up because he understands what the offense is trying to do.

Pretty wild they traded up for a RB with Mont, Gibbs and Reynolds already on the roster. So many places to add depth to this roster that 4th string RB is an interesting choice. Not here to criticize Holmes - he’s my guy - but I def did not see this coming.

You are right about that, having that understanding of how the coverages spin, what side it’ll come from, what the SAF movement pre and post snap mean do give a significant advantage. I understand what you’re saying now

Vaki is a special team player

If he’s an RB he’ll be the 3rd guy. For sure an upgrade over Reynolds

Don’t forget Bam Knight!

This is but one reason I think Vaki is much more than a RB

Core guy, all 4 units of ST’s

But…

I don’t think you give up what they did if you only see him as an ST’s guy

The new kickoff has to be one of the reasons. He will be perfect for it.

Great point, I can’t wait to see this new kickoff format

He’s perfect for it IMO.

And his HS Coach swears slot WR. So the trick play and offensive penalty potential is through the roof

Depth safety.

Special teams star

And most importantly
KICK OFF RETURNER

We can totally steal a roster spot with him if we want to.

As a RB think Roy Helu with next level receiving chops

OK, went down the rabbit hole on this guy, and as others have mentioned: special teams star in the making, and a solid reserve at safety/running back, and a fantastic locker room guy. He’s a football player who will make others better around him.

They gave up a lot for a developmental tackle from somewhere unknown and Special Teams ace/possible long term Craig Reynolds replacement. Not a fan. Just one of those Trust in Brad situations.

He did switch back to rb for us but im pretty certain he never practiced as a db here.

2 way player more likely to play more safery in the league. I thing Brad sees him for what he is and not what other want him to be. He is different and that is ok.

Huh? That’s how you see Vaki.

When it’s all said and done easy top 50 player in this draft IMO. He’s awesome.

Here’s the great thing about Vaki as a RB.

If Monty goes down he can absolutely thump. If Gibbs goes down he can absolutely run all of Gibbs’ routes.

Such an awesome pick. He was mocked everywhere to us. We probably should have done a better job concealing our feelings for him. Oh well.
