Why would Zeitler play out the string for anyone without legitimate SB ambitions?
Personally, I think the relationships he developed with Fraley and the other OL will carry the day in the end (assuming the Lions want him back–and they should).
My thoughts probably belong in a different thread but here we are.
The discussion of the Bears targeting CR made me think about this.
One of the interesting things I have found about MCDC and Holmes is how they treat the roster as 70 deep.
Some teams clearly treat the PS as a place where you throw just developmental players. But the Lions have used to to some extent to stack depth and also allow some tweaking of the players that dress based on the Game Plan and opponent.
I do think the NFL needs to do some things to allow teams to transition players back and forth on the PS or have a tiered PS designation.
The NFL with the expansion of the number of games really needs to look at allowing a team to be able to expand the roster to better manage player health.
After last year, I’d be in favor of a 93 man roster.
Only if it was a massive overpay and even then I don’t see it. Dude has spent the last 4 seasons with the Ravens and Lions. He’s in his mid 30’s. I don’t see him going anywhere that isn’t a legit contender. He’s never won a super bowl. 15 year vet.
Dude the Bears have been serious SB contenders for the last 3 years according to all of their fans on X!
The nfl also needs to get rid of the game day roster limits. Why are owners paying players to sit at home? It made sense back when the nfl wasn’t making money like today’s version. Keeping traveling costs down was important. That’s not the case anymore. So why have the rule?
Completely agree. And they don’t even sit at home. They travel with the team and cheer them on from the sidelines. But not allowed to play. Gotta stick to the strict game day roster limit which is beyond ridiculous. Next thing you know a couple injuries in the 1st quarter and you got guys playing out of position when a healthy dude is standing on the sidelines but can’t play.
They pretend to care about player safety. One of the best ways to improve player safety is have more players active for games.
You’ll see the change when they go to an 18 game schedule.
The emergency 3rd qb dresses and isn’t allowed to play unless the other qb’s get hurt. Why not dress one more player at every position with the same rule.
For example, Manu is dressed but can’t play unless we had an injury at offensive tackle. If Decker or Sewell, god forbid get hurt, you have another guy ready to step in. Seems like such an easy solution.
I like the thoughts about an expanded roster. Heck, bad teams could just roster 120 guys and always have fresh but terrible players.
If they didn’t do it at 17 what makes you believe they’ll change now? Asking out of curiosity not malice.
If i remember right, they moved to 17 games without many concessions to the players, but the union has openly said they don’t want 18 so there will have to be something ownership gives on
My only comment is that parts of the game and discussion of player safety are changing rapidly.
Also if you watch high level soccer teams in EU they roll basically 2 rosters. Saving best players for big games and playing the 2nd string in games where they have a massive advantage.
The NFL really needs to think about this.
And I get it. You pay to see KC verse Carolina and Mahomes sits because they suck and he needs a rest day. The fans hate when elite players sit. So there is that side also
Absolutely. The nba is unwatchable because of non stop 3 pointers but the "load management” of star players is terrible for the sport too.
If you need "load management” your season is probably too long or you need to call @Doctor_Love he’s got some pills that might help. ![]()
If the Jags hire Ian Cunningham as their GM, the Bears will get a couple of comp picks, just like we did for AG. (The Rams and 49ers also have minority candidates up for the job).
The lions took good advantage of other teams practice squads this past season. Extended rosters might hurt that ability. But having more available already might cut the need to poach.
I like the idea of a much expanded practice squad with a limited ability to poach by other teams (for instance the player as to have been only on ps for a full year or something to that effect) and more options to move players up. It helps safety and also serves to motivate players to work to get to move up.
Bears will need a spotless draft to do anything right.
