I confess I don’t know how much money unvested fringe players like Small are guaranteed by being on the initial roster. I thought they were guaranteed a full minimum salary, but I now understand that’s not the case. I’ll bet @Deadstroke would have the answers and the nuance to the answers.

Couldn’t they just be added to veteran practice squad and elevated for games.
I do not think they can until after 1pm today. I’m not 100% sure on that.
I think Conklin wants to test FA first.
Dortch I am guessing there’s a plan in place but the team has to give him a chance to sign with another team and get a fully guaranteed contract before they can offer him an alternative.
Actually I think they can be signed by anyone, right now, but no teams are going to sign anyone until waivers finishes and they see how things shake out.
That is how I understand it as well. It comes down to Waived and Released.
If you are a veteran who was released, you are free to sign with anyone, at any point. If you were put on waivers, you are exposed so anyone in the NFL can submit a claim on you. I think its players under 3 years of experience get waived, anyone over gets released. I could be wrong on the term part, but the designation should be accurate.
Right now, you have all NFL teams submitting waiver claims. They won’t know who they actually get until after 1pm. At that point, the NFL will award waiver claims to their new teams. Once that process finishes and teams see who they actually got, then free agents will be signed to fill anymore roster gaps.
I get how the waiver claim system works, but holy hell it has to be crazy for the NFL offices sorting through this epic mass of transactions in the matter of 19 hours.

Both Conklin and Dortch are vetted veterans so they’re free agents and free to sign with anyone right now.
I don’t believe teams can start to build their PS until after 1pm today which is when the waiver wire is over.
But Veterans have until (I believe Friday at 6pm) to be on an active roster and count towards the league year. Which means their contract becomes fully guaranteed if they are.
So my understanding is if Dortch doesn’t get a contract by then he’s likely back in week 2 on a non-guaranteed contract.
While Conklin may test FA a bit before coming back to a PS spot or just wait for the Lions or another team to have an opening on the active roster for him.
It is 4 years. Four full years makes a vetted veteran. Which means if your cut your automatically a FA. But if you’re fully vetted and signed before Friday at 6pm (I believe that’s the deadline) then your contract is fully guaranteed.
Anyone not vetted has to clear waivers before they can sign with another team. The waiver wire ends at 1pm today. In 5 minutes.

Identify a handful of players at positions of need who might be available on waivers and prescout them.

For the teams you can do that, I meant for the actual NFL offices, who get 32 teams submitting claims on guys, and having to sort out who submitted claims for that player, who gets the player based on priority, telling the other teams no, and then repeating that same process for every single player someone submitted a claim for. Plus, any team that claims a player, must then submit a new waiver release to open a fresh spot on their 53.
I’m sure it’s old hat to them, but man that has to be a flurry of activity going on and it all has to be done before 1pm so that teams then know who they can bring in for their PS.
I’m sure it would be rough if they were using card catalogs or a Rolodex, but I’m guessing it’s automated or handled by a superior AI that doesn’t ■■■■ with them just for fun.
Seeing the final Waiver sheet (thanks to who posted that), it’s far less busy than I thought it would be.

I feel that increasingly teams see these players as fungible and would rather keep guys in their system. We fret about losing guys, but forget that every other team has a handful of pre-season All Pros as well
