6th and 7th Rounds

Looking for the proverbial. “late round gems”, that would fit our needs and locker room.

At LB, out of UNLV, Jackson Woodward. He played inside there but I could see him making the move to WILL.

At TE, Luke Lachey, my homer is falling in what is another very good class of TE’s. He’s the real deal, numbers didn’t show much because of their reliance on the run and a shitty QB. He actually had 6 more receptions than Kittle did his senior year though. Do not sleep on this guy.

At CB, Zah Frazier, UTSA, press corner with excellent tackling skills. Good size at 6’2" 185. I assume Nohl Williams is already gone.

At WR, Will Sheppard, Colorado. Read the criticisms then watch the tape, there is a disconnect. 6’2" and 198, outside guy we could use.

At DT, Nazir Stackhouse, Georgia. Not a 3 down guy but a 6’3" 327 nose tackle that would provide great depth.

At DE/Edge, Tyler Batty, BYU. 6’5" 275, also not a 3 down guy yet but gives gap integrity vs the run.

OL I’m pretty iffy on past the 5th round, we were extremely lucky to have a guy like Mahogony fall to us last year.

At QB I would take a flyer on Kurtis Rourke if he makes it to the 7th round.

RB’s will have plenty to choose from, not really picking and choosing any of them at this point.

Who do you guys like late?

I like QB Taylor Elgersma out of Laurier in Canada. This is the kind of QB you want to roll the dice on. He has a legit arm, is smart, has great leadership skills, and had unreal production in Canada. Obviously Canadian University Football is very bad, but he can only play against the competition put in front of him. He looked like a man amongst boys. He got a last minute invite to the senior bowl and showed well. He has real tools IMO and is worthy of a late round flyer.

Round 6? Run up to the podium.

Kurtis Rourke - Reminds me of Goff. Accurate, smart, can throw with touch. Like him

Why do some of the sims say we have 3 picks in the 7th round? We only have 2 correct?

Just two as far as I know.

Man I love mining the 6/7th rounds.

So I like a lot of the same guys as you. Lachey, Woodward, Frazier, Batty would all be on my list. Also:

  • Teddye Buchanan, LB, Cal: Probably my favorite LB prospect for value. Playmaker, good in coverage, future WILL

  • Collin Oliver, edge/LB, Oklahoma State: We met with him, glove fit for our SAM spot. Most sims have him as a 6/7th rounder right now but I’m starting to worry they’re too low, especially after the performance yesterday.

  • Andrew Armstrong, WR, Arkansas: My comp is Tim Patrick so figuring how he fits is easy. All he ever did was thrive against the best college football had to offer despite being their main threat.

  • Malik Verdon, S, Iowa State: Just a freak for being available that late. Injury history plus middling instincts are the reason, but man what a ball of clay. And plays with a good attitude.

  • Seth Henigan, QB, Memphis: Has that Purdy ability to extend plays in the pocket (though like Purdy not much of a threat to run downfield). Decent arm, accurate deep thrower. He led the comeback that won the Senior Bowl.

  • Jacorey Croskey-Merrit, RB, Arizona - Anyone who watched the Shrine Bowl knows why. This guy would be going a lot higher if he would have been eligible.

  • Gavin Bartholomew, TE, Pitt - My favorite blocker in this class, even if he doesn’t have the typical size of a blocking TE

  • Jake Majors, iOL, Texas - Lack of elite traits could keep him down but he lacks weaknesses too imo. Classic high-floor center who you look up and he’s been starting for ten years.

  • Caleb Rogers, iOL, Texas Tech - A more recent deep-dive, he’s another like Verdon who has traits you typically don’t find this far down, but might have a fatal flaw with the lunging. Worth a shot late though.

  • Junior Tafuna, iDL, Utah - We’re gonna LOVE him. A little like Majors in that he’s a jack of all trades master of none, but all he does his show up. Just like he did in Senior Bowl practices and the game.

  • Davin Vann, iDL, NC State - one of @CuriousHusker’s favorites, freak athlete with wrestling background and a GREAT story. He’s small, but it’s hard to imagine how he’s falling through the cracks.

  • Jailin Walker, LB, Indiana - Playmaker supreme, but very small. More of a S/LB hybrid really, but could be a JRM replacement.

You think we can get them that late?

I think they’re day 3 guys all the way. Rounds 6 and 7? It wouldn’t shock me with Teddye. There are a lot of LBs around his range and it will be a flavor deal. Thankfully he only had a good combine, not a great one.

Oliver is tougher to peg since he plays such a unique spot. The Pittsburgh’s of the world aren’t gonna love throwing him in as a pure 3-4 OLB with arms below 31 inches in length. That’s pretty much pure LB stuff. But for the few teams who use pass-rushing SAMs he’s a glove fit. But how many are there? Us, maybe the Jets and Bears now? I don’t know.

Yep, total pocket passer with incredible completion rate at like 69.8%.

Here’s the deal, last year had a bumper crop of TE’s and now this year looks pretty similar. In the past just being from TEU would have put late 3rd early 4th, not so much considering his production even given the crappy QB. If he gets into the 6th we might want to package a 6th and 7th to move up to get him, we’ll see.

I know that we’re not supposed to helmet scout but between the TE U thing and the bloodlines I think he goes in round 4.

In his situation the combine could be very telling.

Carson bruener LB. Smaller LB but from the tape I watched I like him especially as a late Rd pick

Love threads like these… I recognized all these names on the list which is always a good sign this early in the process.

Add- LaJohntay Wester WR FAU/Colorado

He’s the WR you want late

Yes you do. You’re depth of prospects far exceeds mine. I learn so much from you in this area.

I do have to say it might cloud your judgement a bit when looking at earlier prospects because you love some of these guys so much late you think we can wait on a position earlier and get a guy later that will be just as good.

These are late rounders for a reason generally lol

I Think Brady Cook has some Jeff Garcia to his game.

I’d like him in the 7th

That’s a fair critique, but I also think it’s sound strategy. Remember the inside the Den when Brad waited on ARSB? Same approach.

Also I still have them rated, so while I may really like Andrew Armstrong, I’d take Horton in the 3rd over him 10 times out of 10. It’s all about lining up value. And I would never pass on an elite talent like Harmon for someone in the 6th/7th. Now would I take another position knowing I had guys I liked at iDL in the later rounds? Maybe. But that’s a legit part of the equation imo

I will add S/OLB Hunter Wohler. Speed is a concern but he has instincts, good tackler and is tough. He is a good football player. 2023 All Bg Ten. Possible he can add weight and be a sub-package LB?

I think he’s an ideal Rodrigo replacement
