A look at upcoming QB deals, including Goffs

Joel, a former agent, is suggesting that
Dak could get close to $60M
Lawrence $52.5M
Tua $51M
Goff $48M-$52M
Love $50.3M
Cousins $41M
Mayfield $25M-$40M

WHy would anyone pay Prescott that kind of money? He is not elite and not even a top 5 QB IMO. I also wouldn’t pay Tua, Lawrence or Love that kind of money if I were their GMs.

It’s more about the push of valuation of franchise QB’s as a percentage of the salary cap than against the actual numbers. Your average QB will cost 20% and up in the initial year of a new contract, and that valuation has been fairly consistent during the salary cap era. If the salary cap was 500 million per year, you would see QB contracts with an average value of 100 million per year being doled out across the league.

I’ve always been surprised that the NFLPA has never touched this. On one hand, they want everyone to make as much money as possible. On the other hand, there are 53 guys on a team and when one guy is making 17-20% of a team’s cap, that leaves the other 52 fighting for whatever is left. I’ve just always been surprised that with how many of the NFLPAs members are not QBs (and downright hate that a QB can barely be touched in today’s game), that they haven’t instituted anything in the CBA that limits the % of cap space that one player can receive.

Something like the max contract in the nba? Would be interesting to see how that impacts the game

I absolutely agree that it’s pretty out of whack. However, the counter to that argument is that no one is buying the jerseys of Long Snappers, no one is tuning in to watch the Center, no one is buying season tickets to watch the Punter. QB’s drive the team financial picture, and are also subject to the rookie CBA agreement to a punitive degree relative to the importance of the position. That’s the counter, however I do think there’s room to make some adjustments, as you said.

This is why i equated it to the max contracts of the nba, that is the equivalent as the stars in the nba are also the reason people buy season tickets these days.

With that said, i think if you force a max you will have more borderline qbs getting the max and that likely unfairly benefits teams that have mahomes and others. It would potentially extend the benefit of the rookie contract window as a cap on their cap position levels the compensation attributed to the position but also could negatively impact competition as most qbs will make the same amount by league rules.

Are we signing Goff to an extension this year? Anyone else saying “why?”. I hear that it MAY save $$ in the long run, but OTOH, alot can happen in a year.

I mean he took us to the nfccg and the fans got behind him and the team. With that said, if hooker proved to be an upgrade (unexpected) you could see a smith/mahomes situation. An extension would make that much less likely i think

I think they should 100% put a cap based on percentage.
The argument about long snappers is proof that there should be a cap because these top dogs also get endorsement money. So you basically double bang them? No I say set a limit and roll with it. Spread the money out so fewer guys end up broke after football (will it help? maybe not but it sure sounds reasonable…LOL).

I also think the league would do well to have a hefty placement bonus on all players. I am not sure how that looks but listening to that St. Brown podcast it is obvious Fields is part of the “hey lets not get anyone hurt” crew and thinks they should all be going at about 90% so it is all good…which is why outside of the NFL and College football I only watch the playoffs. The NBA regular season is unwatchable IMO and the playoffs are barely better. The NHL is slightly better than the NBA but still playoff hockey is 10X better. And my first love is MLB but that sport lost me years ago. I will go watch a few games a year but in general it lost be through all the player strikes and owner greediness.
You want to watch a good regular season game go watch the English Premiership and watch a mid-level squad. They are playing for their very lives or they get sent down.

Actually, minus interceptions, Dak had a great season. He’s similar to Goff in that pressure get to him and he tends to force things.
Also, when forced to win a game by themselves, I’m not sure they can do it.

Cowboys are really in a rough spot this year with Daks current contract

Hes own pretty much 60 mil fully guaranteed

Has a no trade clause and no tag clause

Cowboys are forced to extend him to make room for money, or lose him in FA next year with no plans at QB

Its that bad lol

The biggest thing going for Dak is he can’t be franchised, so that threat is off the table. When teams and agents negotiate long term deals, especially for QB’s the franchise tag amount is always part of the negotiation.

Like with Jared, his potential tag amounts are $39M (2025) and $46.5M (2026). That is the floor for negotiating and $50 (2027) and $55 (2028) . . . Thats $190.5M ($47.625M/yr).

But back to Dak, there is no tag amount for 2025 or 2026, so . . .

yeah thats why im saying im fine with giving Goff 50 mill per year, cause in a couple years that contract will be league average

biggest thing, will be the GTD money and the years on the extension
