After not meeting sack goal as a rookie, Kayvon Thibodeaux wants more this

The Lions drafted the right one.

Does anyone have data on how KT did with run support? I honestly do not know.

If I am remembering properly, people who were pro Trayvon Walker and pro-Hutch asserted that their strength in the run game would be a big asset. KT was supposed to be a flame thrower at rushing the passer.

If KT is neither great on run support nor getting good sacks… Yeesh. Of course, he is only one year into the league, and could of course develop!

James Houston > Thibby

Well, this certainly falls under the “duh” category. Wish I remembered who wanted him over Hutch, so I could point and laugh.

Its not really their fault. The draft profiles were made up BS and he was touted as “the next Von Miller.” Who wouldn’t want that? He was never going to be the next Von Miller because he is a different size and type of player.

So far Tibby-Doh is exactly who we thought he would be.

I remember a long debate here over him, I was never really one to buy into him.

He had 12 of his 49 tackles in 1 game…
against OTs Charles Leno and Cornelius Lucas of the Commies.

He also wasn’t even blocked on 2 of his 4 sacks…

and another “sack” was kind of luck because Lamar Jackson was holding the ball with only 1 hand in the pocket and Thibs knocked it out.

I am not defending Thibs because I was 100% against the Lions drafting him. I wanted Hutch all day long. Most because I believed that Hutch floor was much higher but his ceiling maybe was not as high as far as sacks and such. After year 1 I would double down on Hutch floor is way higher and his ceiling is higher. Hutch is an every down DE that has show he might also be an elite pass rusher. If you broke down most of his sacks he did not have a bunch of “he blew up his guy, collapsed pocket…crushed QB” sacks. I feel like there are not many dudes that have more than a couple of those a season anyway. But Hutch got his fair share of hustle and effort sacks and TFL and is that not what the Lions wanted anyway. Give me a team of guys who are talented and show great effort every play and I will show you a team that finishes above 500 every season. This is the Steelers blue print to a T. I do not need to have freak level talent. I just need at or above average talented players that give 100% and are bought in to win consistently in the NFL. Then when that program/org gets a few freaks they can leverage those players into playoff wins and SB wins. The first step is setting the culture. Then start sprinkling in players that meet the culture requirements and watch out.
This is 100% why we are all so pumped about the Lions. They have focused on culture and then also have drafted like they have a brain. Not trying to be smarter than everyone nor are they trying to look like they are smart by doing what the pundits say. They have a clear plan and type of player that want and are bringing them in by the truck loads.
This years the Lions will be cutting good players. Think about that statement. They will be letting really good solid players walk because that is where the roster is sitting now. This is truly a first for this organization. Yes they have let good players go in the past, but that was usually due to being idiots or being clueless. Not because the roster is now so deep.

I still think he’s gonna be really good. I wouldn’t take him over Hutch - and I wouldn’t have in the draft - but I’d take him 10 times out of 10 over Walker. He had a fine rookie season for an edge rusher, especially considering his injury.

I would definitely take Walker over Tibby-Doh. They had the same sack production, but Walker is more sound in the run game.

To each his own. I don’t think Walker will ever be as dynamic. I think Thibs will have ~30% more sack production than Walker in a normal year (especially if they Jags make Walker a 5T, as there’s been talk of). I expect Walker to be fine, but I think he’ll be more like a Solomon Thomas, Clowney or Emmanuel Ogbah type player. Solid but not spectacular. Maybe Carlos Dunlap if the Jags are lucky. But we’ll see.

For me defensive specialist are not something I love. It creates this “timing the market” mentality needed to be successful. And especially in todays NFL where down and distance no longer dictates run or pass it really makes it easier for offenses to get over on the defense based on overly specialized packages. And it also allows the offense to know what is up defensively if they are able to dictate the personnel (specialized types) and be able to call plays accordingly.
I get it. Thibs becomes a 15+ sack guy and you have arguments all day. But I would rather have a Hutch type who never eaves the field with 10 sacks and 10 TFL because he is always out there. It keeps the offense honest.
This is just my opinion. I get there is a whole discussion of pass rush and players and player groups. I just think the fewer guys you need to swap out to create chaos the tougher it is for teams to beat your defense. Kind of like offenses that always are in the same formation or very similar one all the time. It does not give the defense a read and makes them play more straight up. It works both ways.

I was one on a purely athletic standpoint. I knew Hutch was much more the perfect Grinder fit here and KT was going to be more Diva. I felt it was up to the staff to know who was what they wanted more. It’s all good if folks want to take victory laps after a rookie season, and people feel they have all they need to know about two players careers after 15 games.

I felt KT would be the best true pass rusher and that Hutch was going to be the better overall DE that would be stouter against the run, but less bendy and explosive off the EDGE. I felt/feel that it is easier to get a really good SSDE type ala Cominsky/Paschel/Romeo than a 10-15 sack guy. But one certainly can’t say Hutch was awesome in run defense with one solo tackle more than KT in 3 more games played, while KT is somehow a poor man’s James Houston. Hutch was the better pass rusher this past season. More pressures, more sacks. But KT ain’t no punk.

A few data points for a bit of perspective. KT is a good football player and had a very strong rookie season. He missed time due to injury. Undoubtedly played some hurt coming off of it. But both he and Hutch were great picks. Of course I want Hutch to be the better player now. But I’ll be a man and stand up for what I said back then. I’m not going to eat crow on KT based on what happened in year one. It’s just too early for victory laps and I’m uber happy Hutch is our guy. Both things can be true at once.

In three fewer games:

He had 5 PD’s to Hutch’s 2.
He had 2 FF’s to Hutch’s 0.
He had the same amount of FR’s w 2.
He had one less solo tackle than Hutch.
He had two less QB hits than Hutch.
He had three less total tackles than Hutch.
He had three less TFL’s than Hutch.

Hutch also had 3 picks, which are like ultra PDs. I’m not expecting 3 picks every year but he got his hands on the same number of balls as KT.

Not disputing that KT looks a good player though.

Here’s my completely short-lived opinion on the matter.

Good for him. Enjoy Giants. Don’t really care what his goals are.

That might seem harsh, but that’s because I truly give no ■■■■■.

how many interceptions did he have?
Joking. I wanted hutch because of attitude more than anything, but I believe hutch’s ceiling is higher than I anticipated. bosa-like player coming up!!!

He is a good player that is only going to show up in spurts. That was always going to be the biggest issue with him. He had his best game of the year…by far…in one of the teams only primetime games. Which again was predictable. If he ever puts up big sack numbers in the NFL it will be with one of the annoying stat lines where he gets most of his sacks in only a hand few of the games.
